This is a songfic based on a song by my favorite band, Steeleye Span. It's an English folk/rock group (not PC, they sing songs from round the British Isles, but I wanted to make the distinction between Bristish and American folk music), who were around in the Sixties and are still going strong today. Anyway enough background. I love the tunes, and often change the words to suit my mood, feelings, life etc. I wrote this... ooo, ages ago, but only found time to write it up recently. I's based on a song called 'The Blacksmith' and can be found on their album 'Hark! The Village Wait'. The tune and half the words are theirs, the rest is mine. Reviews would be much appriciated, I know that it doesn't rhyme very well, coz I'm not brilliant at this, I'm no songwriter. I've got whole loads of stuff like this stored in my brain, mainly LotR, so there could be more if there's a demand. O by the way, the subject of my song is Legolas (who else?)

The Elf - 'The Blacksmith'

O an Elf he courted me, nine months and better,

He fairly won my heart, he gave me an arrow.

With his bent bow in his hand, he looked so clever,

And if I were with my love I would live forever.

O where is my love gone, with his cheeks like roses,

He's gone across the Sea, gathering sweet verses.

I'm afraid the shining Sun might burn and scorch his beauty,

And if I were with my love I would do my duty.

Strange news is a come to town, strange news is carried,

Strange news flies up and down, that my love has tarried.

O I wish him all my joy, but he can't hear me,

And if I were with my love I would do my duty.

O what did you promise me when you walked beside me,

You said you'd marry me, and not deny me.

If I said I'd marry you 'twas only to please you,

But walk with me again and I'll not deny you.

To the Havens let us go, I will sail beside you,

In Tirion we will dwell, and I'll not deny you.

My lips grew pale and wan, it made my poor heart tremble,

For to Valinor I'll go, O fair and beautiful.

O an Elf he courted me, nine months and better,

He fairly won my heart, he gave me an arrow.

With his bent bow in his hand, he looked so clever,

And if I were with my love I would live forever.
