Never judge a book by it's cover. Everyone knows that simple yet insightful saying, but few follow it. They take one look at a person and they make their judgements based on what they look like. Jake McCartey knew the feeling all to well. People looked at him and saw what he wanted them to see, not what he truly was. They took one look at his funky hair, smiling face, and rookie attitude and thought him incompetent. He told Sara that he was an FBI Agent on loan to the DOJ, which in part was true. He was an agent for the FBI, but he also worked for another organization. He was on assignment for the Vatican.
Ever since the Witchblade had been given to one of Hitler's Generals, the Vatican had kept very close tabs on it. So many of the Vatican's top priests had deemed the Witchblade an object of evil, they said that it changed it wearer and thus should be destroyed. But the question was, how do you destroy a supernatural wepon?
When they learned that Sara Pezinni was in all likelihood to wear the blade next, they had sent him to watch her, to record the changes that occurred in her. So far the only changes were they fact that she was more driven, more willing to fight for what was right, and she was stronger in body and in soul. But that wasn't the only reason he was there.
Jake had to make sure that the Witchblade didn't fall into Kenneth Irons' hands again, he had worn it once and it couldn't happen again. The mere fact that he survived wearing it was a miracle in itself, but he had and he now shared a connection to it that was almost as strong as Sara's.
Jake wasn't a preist by any means, but due to his heritage, he was in line to be the next watcher. Just as his father had done and just as his father's father. Since he had agreed to this assignment expecting something totally different than Sara, he had the shock of his life when he had been introduced to her. Beautiful as a rose and twice as fragile looking, but tough as nails. She was fire and ice, satin and leather.
People watched him with a suspisous gleam glowing in their eyes. He was the rookie on the force, the unknown, therefore he needed to be watched. The thought made him want to laugh, they were the ones that needed watching, with people like Kenneth Irons and Ian Nottingham running around, they were all in danger. He could take care of himself, far better than anyone knew.
Watching Sara with her partner Danny made him smile. He knew what she had done, when he went to Kennth's home he knew that he would more than likely be killed, but he also knew the powers of the Witchblade. Sara had turned back time, and for some reason he wasn't totally unaware of the fact, maybe because he had been warned that it might happen, he had also been warned not to interfere with the Witchblade, not to help Sara at all, let her choose her own path. But the more he got to know her, the more he knew that it was impossiable to just let her go blindly forward; to ignore the fact that she needed his help. He had been partnered with Sara and with Danny whereas before he had been partenered with just Sara.
So he did his job, both of them. On one hand he was filtering out the corruption in the force for the DOJ and on the other, he was watching and recording the activites of the Witchblade and its wearer. Sara had yet to untap even a tenth of its powers and when she finally did, she would need him and his knowledge. Until then he would play the part he was given, watching and waiting.
