It was cold. So cold it bit down into your very soul, capturing it and holding it prisoner forever. Rain fell from a somber sky, the heavy drops pelting the pavement below. Silence filled the air, only the whisper of the wind to be heard. And so it had begun. The slow, yet unmistakable, descent to evil. He had forever embraced the darkness that enveloped him. He walked the blackened streets, his footsteps echoing into the night. A sinister smile unleashed itself upon his lips, he had become what he had most hated and treasured. And he could never go back.
He unlatched the lock and stepped into the dimly lit room. She sat in the corner, trembling, her emerald eyes nervously darting about. Her hands were bound at the wrists and rope was wound tightly around her ankles. He stared at the beauty, drinking her in, before striding over to his beloved. His fingertips grazed along side her rosy cheek as she struggled to pull away in disgust from his touch. He laughed ruefully at her feeble attempt.
"You're more than this Lex," she spoke in a hushed tone.
"Am I?" he inquired. "And what makes you think so my love?" The sentence seductively rolled off his tongue.
"Us," her voice quavered.
"Dear child," he began, "you are nothing to me."
"Don't lie," her bottom lip quivered as she desperately tried to bite back tears. She'd never let him see her cry. She wouldn't let him have the satisfaction of seeing her broken.
Lex merely smirked at her foolish remark and seated himself in a nearby chair. His face hidden in the shadows, he watched her intently.
"Why are you doing this?" she cried out.
"You're a bright girl Miss Sullivan, why don't you tell me?" he questioned.
"What happened to you?" Chloe asked as tears once more formed behind her eyes.
"Interestingly enough, you are what happened to me," he told her.
"I thought I meant nothing to you," she spat.
"You mean nothing and everything to me…" Lex's voice grew hoarse and he leaned back, making sure she couldn't see the torment passing over his face.
"I don't understand," she shook her head, blond locks sticking to her brow with sweat.
"I don't suppose you would," he countered.
"Then tell me," Chloe pleaded. "Tell me what made you do this Lex. What made you like this? Because there was a time that you loved me—"
"I never loved you," Lex cut her off abruptly.
"How can you say that? How can you lie to me?" she screamed. Lex felt his heart shatter at the sadness laced in her voice, her horrid words grating against his very soul. He wondered just how it had come this far. And then a sickening thought settled upon him. Lex had let it. He had allowed all this to happen. Quickly he stood and paced the small, dark room as if trying to rid his mind of such thoughts.
"You are such a coward Lex," Chloe stated. She'd had enough. If Lex wanted to play, so could she.
"In a situation like yours I'd be reluctant to say such things," Lex said.
"Or what? You'll kill me?" Her body involuntarily shuddered as she finished the sentence. She sucked in a shaky breath and continued, "Go ahead."
"Are you challenging me Miss Sullivan?" he mused.
"Can the Miss Sullivan shit…"
"What brought on this sudden display of bravery?" Lex queried.
"If you won't answer my questions where would you ever get the notion that I'd even acknowledge yours?" Chloe snarled.
"You want to know how all this happened? How we got here? How I got here?" Lex bellowed.
"Yes," she replied in a strained tone.
"You plain and simple Chloe. This is all because of you…"
