Eternal Love

Summary: Love lasts through all barriers… Even through death and nonexistence… This is set before the ending but after the last boss, Necron.

Disclaimer: I don't own anything from FFIX.

Where would I be if Zidane was still here? Would I be happier or sadder… I mean, it isn't like I can marry him, because he is just a peasant… But still… He is--no, was, really funny and I probably would be a lot happier with him…

Princess Garnet sat on her mother's throne, wishing for her comrade's appearance.

"Milady, you must be crowned soon," Beatrix said, walking in and startling the young lady.

"…Y-yes… I suppose you are right… I shall leave that in your hands, Beatrix…"

The warrior bowed and walked out.

Garnet quickly got up and walked to her room. Locking the door, she changed into her orange jumpsuit. Tying back her hair, she blinked back tears of anger and frustration, remembering all the good times she and Zidane had.

Then she leapt out the window, and scrambled down the ivy-covered wall.

I wanted to be free… I wanted to be kidnapped and I wanted to run away… But look where it has taken me. I'm soon to be queen of Alexandria, and I'm not free. I don't have what I want, but I am what everyone wants me to be…

Everyone but Zidane… He wanted me to be me… Not some imposter or some 'princess' or 'queen'. He wanted me to be different and for me to be liberated from my lineage and my destiny…

The queen climbed up the tower to the right of the main castle. She ran and easily dodged the Knights of Pluto, who were exercising. Stifling a giddy giggle, Garnet continued up the winding staircase.

Finally, she reached the peak.

"This is where we started, and this is where it shall all end… I do not deserve… I am not worthy of being Queen of this kingdom; I am not the true Princess Garnet… I am only Sarah, the summoner of Madain Sari… That is all."

The streamers had been freshly tied for her coronation feast and the following play.

…That play… The scoundrel and Tantalus… They tried to kidnap me! Hehehe… They never thought I would have gone willingly… She shook her head and sighed.

'I want to be your Canary' Maybe if I wish hard enough, Zidane will be there… Maybe, just maybe… We'll go back to the beginning and none of this will have ever have happened…

No. I have no use for wistful thinking now. I shall… No, I'll end this here and now…

Dagger untied one of the ribbons and closed her eyes, envisioning the past becoming the present. But she realized something.

"I forgot my shawl!"

Quickly, she tied the ribbon around her waist and stood on top of the ramparts.

Her eyes scanned the kingdom, finally landing on what she was searching for, Tantalus's airship.

As they landed, she nimbly jumped from the tower.

The Evil Forest and Blank… The Caverns… It's all getting so clear now…

The Village of Dali… the cargo Airship… And Vivi…

Uncle Cid… Freya… The tournament… It all seems so real…

Lindblum… Then Alexandria… Oh, the pickle bag… That rotten reek stayed with me for days!

Then Dark City Treno…Gargan Roo…Pinnacle Rocks, Ramuh and the Peridot…

Lindblum, ruined, because of mother…

Dagger choked back a sob, reminiscing. She opened her eyes, and felt oddly renewed.

Blinking, she stared at the figure of the genome beside her.

He beckoned to her and she, enchanted, followed.

"Zidane!"
