Letters from Gabriel and Benjamin Martian

Dear Father,

June 1775

I have joined the Continental army. I have just fought at Bunker Hill. While we were lining up to attack I heard one of the generals say, "don't fire 'till you see the whites of their eyes." I shot and killed at least 8 red coats. The Continental army killed over 1000 British soldiers. The red coats killed over 400 of our men. The general gave an order to retreat. The British suffered the most in the battle. We retreated to a safe place. One of the generals said we will regroup and head south.

Sincerely,

Gabriel Martian

Dear Son,

June 1775

I know that you fought a hard battle at Bunker Hill. I know how hard it is to lose your first battle. I remember I lost my first battle with George Washington during the French and Indian war. I want to know the general's name that gave the order to retreat because it was a good idea since you were out numbered. Yesterday A British army came by our plantation. A British green dragoon named Colonel Banastre Tarleton came and asked me if I have seen any Continental soldiers. I said no. Then he left. I want to tell you this that I herd him said that the British would arrive at Cowpens South Carolina.

Sincerely,

Benjamin Martin

Dear Father,

The name of the general that gave the order to retreat is Colonel William Prescott. How did you and George Washington survive that lost? When the British came to our plantation were you scared that they will burn down our plantation because I saw a lot of houses that were burned down on the way to South Carolina? By the way I told General Daniel Morgan that the British would be at Cowpens South Carolina. The general told us that General Cornwallis would lead that British army. I have just finish the fight and we won. I am now going to Yorktown to meet up with General Washington.

Sincerely,

Gabriel Martian

Dear Son,

George Washington and I got away safely because we surrendered to the French and they let us go. I was scared I took my rifle and hid it so if they tried to burn our plantation down I would run out the back door and into the woods. I heard the French would help you in the battle this time. Son if you win this battle I will be so proud of you because you will win the war. Did you make any new friends in the army? When you march do you ride on horse back or on foot? How many men do you have in your army?

Sincerely,

Benjamin Martian

Dear Father,

I did make some new friends. One of my friends was a lifesaver. He saved my life at the battle of Yorktown. His name is General Washington. Another friend of mine is Marquis de Lafayette. He is a French General that helped us out in the last battle. I mostly march on foot because it is easier to take cover. I have about 5,000 men in this army. There are at least 1,000 cavalry and 4,000 infantry. Dad how old were you when you joined the army?

Sincerely,

Gabriel Martian

Dear Son,

November 1, 1781

I am proud of you for giving America its freedom. I was 20 years old when I joined the army and fight at the French and Indian war. Can you say thank you to General Washington because he saved your life? I would not bare to see you die because you are my only son. I just sold some tobacco to a merchant. He gave me 10 pounds of gold for each tobacco. I sold ten to him. When will you be coming back son because I got some thing good for you?

Sincerely,

Benjamin Martin
