Farewell
Legolas stood at the stern of
his grey elven ship, facing towards the land of his birth. The wind blew his
golden hair in front of his fair face. He sighed. "I am here, ready to set
sail. The masts of my ship are drawn. I've waited so long for this moment to
come. Yet, my heart is sorrowing instead of rejoicing. I am unsure," he
murmured.
"Ah, Legolas, friend, do
not speak with such a voice of sorrow! You are just sad for leaving the trees!
I myself know of the feeling you speak of, I already miss the fair jewels of
the caves. But, I do not doubt this Eressëa will have stone for mining as
well!" comforted Gimli.
"Nay, friend. I understand your comforting words,
but it is not what I speak of. I feel sorrow and uncertainty, though I know not
why," he sighed. "Perhaps you are right,
perhaps I am just missing the fair woods." He turned from the dwarf
towards the Grey Havens once more. A
tune passed from his lips, his fair elven voice carrying out across the plains.
"Farewell to the lands that bore me
"Farewell to the earth that raised me
"Farewell.
"My
tears of joy were shed here, my tears of pain
"My laughter sang here, my sorrow like rain
"Farewell.
"Farewell to the sunrises, to the sunsets
"Farewell to the new days that dawned, yet.
"Farewell.
"My
dreams came true here, my dreams lay forgotten
"My love rang true here, my love was taken
"Farewell.
"Farewell to the forests tall, to the rivers long,
"Farewell to the soaring eagle, to the golden stag strong
"Farewell.
"My eyes have witnessed pain and sorrow
"My ears have heard songs of peril
"Farewell.
"Farewell
to the beckoning of the sea
"Farewell to the yearn of immortality
"Farewell.
"My heart still lingers in the forest midst
"My soul still dances in the woodland kissed
"Farewell.
"Farewell."
The ship drew away as Legolas' song of sorrow ended. Yet the tune still echoed in the mountains tall, the rolling hills, and lingered in the hearts of those who remained in Middle earth.
