I'm With You

A songfic based on the Avril Lavigne song

A tear fell from her eye, mixing with the thousand drops off rain continually pounding down from the sky, as she leaned against the railing of the bridge and looked into the dark water. Where were her parents? Or at least the servants they should have sent by now to come find her. The girl sighed in despair. Sure they had gotten into another fight, but they couldn't just leave here out on the streets like this… could they? The silence seemed horrible when she was so desperate to hear approaching footsteps. Shivering in the cold, the girl considered throwing herself over the side of the bridge and into the murky waters. No, she thought, I need a new life, not to end the one I have.

"What are you doing out at a night like this?" She jumped at the sound of a boy's voice and turned to face him. "Do you have anywhere to go?" He asked. The girl shook her head slowly, unused to talking to strangers. "Listen," he continued, "I can get you a place to sleep tonight if you want. They don't usually let girls stay, but I'm sure it'll be okay on acounta the storm." She nodded eagerly and took his outstretched hand. She wondered what his name was, but decided it didn't matter, she had someone.

"We're here," the boy said, shaking out his damp brown hair once they were inside a small, dingy building. The upstairs room was large, but cramped with beds and boys. She quickly looked around for a place to sit, but every glance she got was strange and uninviting. Maybe this was a mistake; she should have got home, or waited for them to find her. It wasn't a great place to be, but it beat being alone in such a crowded room.

She started to back away, down the stairs and through the door… and into the cold, lifeless night. A hand on her shoulder startled her, and she looked up into the face of the one who had brought her here. The tension between them was thick, unbroken by words. Eventually, the boy leaned down and brushed his lips to hers. No! What was happening? She didn't know this boy; she must be insane for letting him kiss her. Oh, too many thoughts ran through her head at once, causing terrible confusion. She had to get away from all of her conflicting thoughts and feelings. The girl fled, streaking across the streets to the harbor.

When the boy found her again, she was curled into herself, sitting on the docks. He sat, too, neither even glancing at the other. "I-" he started, then stopped and sighed. The girl turned to him and he to her. As their lips met for a second time, she thought, whoever you are, I'm with you.
