AUTHOR'S NOTES: This is based on spoilers that I have read for the episode mentioned above. It will probably play out quite differently on the show, but here is my take on things. The poem below is mine as well. SUMMARY: Carter proposes. again.
~*~ bitter sugar sweetness
of your hand on my shoulder.
all-encompassing
red swell in my chest.
sleep-like hunger for
your clean breath on my cheek.
debris of heart throbs
as they shatter my resolve.
standing on this side of lust
waiting for you to waver.
~*~ She finds the ring embedded in the chocolate tiramisu dessert, Carter, and the lone violinist in the shadows the only onlookers. Carter looks hopeful, a bit buoyant, and even giddy. But there is still a strain of worry hidden behind his eyes while he tries desperately to read her expression.
"Carter? What's this?"
"Why don't you try it on?"
The ring is not extravagant, not excessive. It is a single diamond, round cut, tucked neatly between petals of gold, three on each side.
She is shocked. She blinks. She breathes. She says it bluntly, without thinking, without looking intro his eyes.
"Carter. It's too soon. I told you."
He feels sliced, split open like a cut, but not surprised, not really, though he still asks why, and he still feels the fast burgundy wave ticking more quickly in his chest while he waits for her to go on. He senses she will.
"We haven't been going out for that long."
"I have told you before, and I will say it again now. I've been drawn to you for two years. I know that you can say the same."
She ponders for a moment. She does not want to say the wrong thing. Not like two months ago. Time becomes taut and extended. "Carter. I am happy the way things are. I am happy with you. Now, at this moment. I don't want things to change. Not yet."
"It doesn't have to. I just want to be with you, Abby."
She seizes his hand, grasps it tightly, till her fingers are almost stark white. "Then be with me. Now. Here."
A few moments slip by, slow, stretched out, like the monotone of healthy heartbeats. He gazes intently. She gazes back, steady. She leans across, and he feels her nicotine breath on his cheek, a wisp in his ear, a hand on his shoulder.
"Patience is a virtue, Carter."
"And so we wait."
"And so we wait." "And so we wait."
