"Hush, my dear one,
sleep serenely,
Now my lovely,
slumber deep"
The lullaby was sung in a soft soprano voice, a voice filled with love. She held him in her arms, never wanting to let go. Lovingly, she brushed his dark hair out of his eyes, as she smiled softly down at him.
"I will rock you,
humming lowly,
Close your eyes now,
go to sleep"
He closed his blue-green eyes and breathed in deeply, filling his lungs with the sweet scent that was his only love. When he opened his eyes once again, he found the ocean of her eyes watching him.
"Angels hover,
Ever nearer,
Looking on your
Smiling face."
She clutched him tightly to her, even as she sang to him. Blonde hair framed her delicate face, as she sat on the bed, holding her beloved.
"I will hold you,
Close enfold you,
Close your eyes now
Go to sleep"
He closed his eyes once more, drawing in a deep breath. The gentle melody of her lilting voice was easing him to sleep, even as he fought to stay awake and listen to her beautiful lullaby.
"Lovely darling,
I will guard you,
Keep you from all
Woe and harm."
Her eyes misted as she sang, but tears did not fall. She couldn't protect him, was not able to keep him from harm, but she had tried. That was why she was singing this to him.
"May you slumber,
Ever softly,
Dream of visions,
Wonderous fair."
He felt himself drifting, falling asleep in her arms. Ragged, labored breaths slowed as he listened to his soulmate's soothing voice.
"I will hold you,
Close enfold you.
Close your eyes now,
Go to sleep."
She felt him drifting off, his breaths slowing, until he took his final breath. A tear slid down her cheek as he died, at the end of Darien's last Lullaby.
