She needed somewhere to go and I took advantage of the situation. She
finally had her last straw with Robert and after much procrastinating. I
helped her move her stuff out of their place in Atlanta and up to mine in
Michigan. It wasn't easy. The actual retrieving of the U-Haul, that was
nothing; Robert...Robert was the challenge.
Robert was always there using profanity as he strutted around in his neck brace. Nicole could take no more and I knew that. I went up to Robert after the last box was transported to the U-Haul. I'd sent Nicole out to wait in the truck while I used the bathroom, lying to her to keep her out of that house. I stood before him. My head only reached his chin. Robert stood firm, and so did I.
"If you ever touch her, or threaten her...If you ever speak to her or glance her way...I swear to the moon, stars, and heaven above I'll break your damn neck again," I said.
"You think you scare me?" Robert growled. He pointed to the orange and white truck outside the window and snorted. "I'll get her back even if it means going through you."
"I'd like to see you try. Seeing that you'll never see her without me at her side." Robert frowned and began to breathe deeply into my face. "You think that playing Mr. To-The-Rescue is gonna get you laid for the first time, Beniot? Don't count on it. She's mine, and if I find out you fuck her I'll cut your balls off."
"I have no intentions of fucking Nicole, Howard," I shot back breathing into his face. "I have the intention of fucking you up." I pushed him away and he stumbled back holding to his neck in pain. The impact of my push caused him a bit of whiplash. There was sense of shame because I hurt and injured man, but all the same I was glad. I turned and left that house slamming the door and listening to Robert curse to the air with the smell of my presence.
I jumped into the driver's seat of the U-Haul, Nicole was shivering into the November breeze. We drove off not talking to each other. Both fearing what could be within the next weeks, days, maybe even hours.
The plan was that we'd keep all her furniture and unnecessary belongings in storage until she found her own place. But instead we moved everything into her and another spare room.
"Thank you," she told me after all was moved and situated.
"Now I want you to know," I began standing in her doorway. She was sitting on the edge of her bed and couldn't see my trembling. "I want you to be comfortable here for as long as you need to stay. My house is your house, my food your food-"
"Thank you," she said again. "And I want to thank you for not killing Robert when you could have. I mean while you were in the bathroom." She smiled and I could only laugh as well.
"It was hard not to," I admitted with a laugh. At that moment Nicole gave me a look that I fell in love with. Her face was relaxed and relived. It'd been months since I'd seen that look on her. It was as if for her, the worst was over and all that was left was to start over.to start over with.to start over with.well
In the back of my mind I wanted to finish that thought with "with me", but I knew I'd jinx any of my chances of anything with her if I did. I closed that thought as the look melted away with the moment and Nicole left the room to make a "welcome roommate" dinner as she called it.
"Your gonna love me for this," she told me rummaging through the pantry.
"I already do," I muttered to myself.
