Malon's Love for Link
"Link you must save all of Hyrule!"
A voice from the temple of time said, Link turned away
"I want to go back to my old life, to my horse Epona and my girl. on Lon Lon Ranch"
Link said to the last of the Sheika's Sheik.
"Link you can't fight Destiny!"
"I fell in love with both that horse and her owner that day. this temple changed my life, if I help save Zelda I'll never have known either of them! Is that what you want for me? Not to have true happiness? I want to be with her!!"
Link ran from the temple, past the four stones, and through the ruins of the market. He dodged past the re-deads and through the path past the Poe shop. He suddenly slowed down then. The draw bridge was broken and a purple mist hovered over the little stream. Link pulled out his Ocarina that a young girl that was escaping from the castle had thrown to him. He played the song he always did for his girl on the ranch. Epona came to him. Link mounted his steed; he heard the cry of a wolf as the sun set behind the hill. Link patted Epona, and the two started up the hill.
By the middle of the night they had reached "Star Gaze Hill", Link quietly got off Epona and looked to the South. A house surrounded by a large fence was a top the hill, the lights shimmered in the distance. Link remembered now he had made a promise to the ranch girl when she had given him Epona. Link suddenly grasped the saddle horn and pulled himself up.
"Hyaa Epona Hyaa!"
Link yelled, whipping the horse from side to side; as Link neared the ranch gates he could all but think of his ranch girl. Her bright red hair blowing in the night breeze, Epona raced into the ranch. As the horse slowed and turned the corner Link swathe light of the house still on.
"Her father must have visitors."
Link thought, as Epona trotted past the barn Link could hear the whiney of Blaze the ranches quarter horse and the bellow of the dairy cows. And the mysterious hoot of his friend the owl. As Epona loped through the field gates, Link yanked the reins forcing the horse to rear up and neigh loudly. Link patted Epona and the horse trotted towards the pens opening. Link stroked Epona's forehead and looked in the distance and saw Malon, His ranch girl. Facing away and singing to the light of the moon. Link could hear Malon's beautiful voice like the gentle sound of Zora's fountain. Though she stood far away Link could still make out her breathing profile. Epona reared at the sound of a crow's caw, and Link slowly began to walk towards the singing maiden. He stopped at a low horse jump and watched Malon still facing away; she swayed to and fro singing to the moon. Link walked on past the higher horse jump. He stood only inches from Malon; he could hear Epona neighing back at Blaze, and the chirp of the crickets. He stared at Malon who still did not seem to see him. Finally Link came to face Malon, her eyes were closed and her hands on her breast, Navi flew over to Malon and circled about her making her look more beautiful. As the fairy dust sprinkled onto Malon's face Link felt lost in emotion.
"I can't bear to break her heart."
Link thought, he could see the moon beginning to twist behind star gaze hill, he knew Malon. She wouldn't sing to an empty sky with no dreamful moon to light it. Link smiled at Malon happily singing Epona's song, then he walked away from Malon and soon made his way back to Epona whose big brown eyes looked sad.
"Its okay girl."
Link said stroking Epona's head.
"Better she doesn't get involved."
Link mounted Epona and rode out of the horse pen until he came to the barn, he aimed his bow near the horse shed where Malon sang and shot. Malon stopped singing and looked back and saw Link ride away. As the morning sun rose and caught Malon's tears in its rays, she knew she would never see him again.
