Disclaimer: Square owns the characters and city, Norma Jean owns the song.

A/N: As more practice for Reno's contest, I'm trying a different style of songfic. It's about none other than Vincent (surprise surprise). It's set to Norma Jean's "Memphis Shall Be Laid to Waste." I cut out one line (because it's a song about Jesus, and since Jesus doesn't exist in the FF world, I took it out). I think it's rather obvious who the narrator is.

Nibelheim Shall Be Laid to Waste

Walk around the room with a glaze in your stare.
In your tuxedo suit.
I will give it a name.
Lower your defenses.
Lower your casket.
Open the door and open your grave.
Murder.
Now you're doing the waltz with your murderer.
Mediocrity is the killer.

He laid emeralds in her eyes,
but I'd already tied a bracelet made of gold
and scarlet thread around her wrist.
Everything was wrong so we sang sentimental songs.
"Oh how seldom we belong but how elegant our kiss."
We painted crooked lines
but we danced in perfect time to a love so much refined,
we know not what it is until like a dullen wine we pour into a grief we've
known before
but never quite like this.
All I know now is regret,
she follows like a silhouette along the cobbelstone behind me,
and she has nothing much to say except to innocently ask,
her voice delicate as glass,
"Do you see me when we pass?"
but I continue on my way.

Look at him. Such a nice suit for such a wretched man. Everyone knows something is wrong with you, but no one knows what. I do. I will give it a name: evil. You are a vile, evil creature, but no one sees it. None of these fools can see past your suit.

I wait for the day you let your guard down. If you give me the chance, I'll end it right here. Just give me the chance.

And fair Lucrecia, do you not see it? He'll be your death, but you dance on ignorantly. If you only knew that you were doing the waltz with your murderer. But would I be any better? I am just a murderer as well.

But you chose pathetic, vile Hojo over me? He thinks he is something great, and he has tricked you into believing the same, hasn't he? But he is nothing compared to Gahst. He is nothing more than a mediocre scientist with aspirations too high for himself. That is his downfall. That is what will kill him and everyone around him. Don't you see it will kill you too?

But no matter how many jewels he gives you, he can never give my gift. Emeralds will never add up to the jewelry I've given. Our son, Lucrecia. What a fit he'll have when he finds out who's it is! But this was never meant to be. You thought we could do it, keep our secret love going behind Hojo's back, but now I see we can't. All that's left now is the memories of the times we shared. Those nights in the park, singing sweet songs to each other.

We do not belong together, but I don't think I'll ever be able to give up the sweet touch of your soft lips. And how we danced. Look at where our dancing has gotten us now. But we never skipped a beat, because we just followed our hearts.

I never knew a love so great until I met you. It is a shame that I had to lose that love as soon as I realized I had it. Now we both will feel the weight of our decisions.

Do I regret it? Yes! A thousand times yes! How I wish you would stop coming for me at night. There is nothing I can do, except watch.

How you delicate voice is when it dances upon my ears. I hear it now, as we head back to our ruined lives. But I continue on my way...
