Gazing at Lily
"Well, you're in a jolly good mood tonight," the girl said petulantly.
"What's so wrong with wanting to gaze at you in the moonlight?" he asked.
"James Potter," she laughed gaily, "when was the last time you ever just wanted to 'gaze'?" She grinned and pulled eagerly at his robe.
He caught her hand gently. "I mean it, Lily" he said. "Let's just sit here a bit. It's spring, there's a full moon, the last one while we're in school, and I just want to be with you. That's all."
"Well, this is a special treat! I thought all your moonlit nights were reserved for Remus!" She smiled and lay back, her head resting in his lap, looking up at his face. He stroked a few strands of red hair back from her face.
"James, is Remus okay? Are Peter and Sirius with him tonight?"
"Hmmm. what? Oh, yes, yes they are." He seemed a little unsure.
"I thought you were going with them. I really worry about him, you know, it all seems so sad to me."
"Shhh," he said sounding a little unsettled, "Uh, Let's not talk about Remus tonight."
"All right, then, what should we talk about?"
"Us," he whispered, so softly she could barely hear him.
She laughed again and they talked. They talked about classes, her plans after Hogwarts, her plans for him after Hogwarts, what type of wedding she wanted to have, and how many children they should have. The evening went swiftly by and the moon was much higher in the sky when he looked up.
"Lily, I should go now," he said, starting to rise.
"What, so Remus wins in the end?" she feigned indignation. "You know James, you really haven't been yourself tonight, is the full moon getting to you, too?"
"Yes," he answered, "that must be it."
"Honestly, I don't think I ever stand a chance against those other three, sometimes."
"Oh, but you do Lily. It's just that I.can never seem to tell you. I never seem to appreciate what I have in you. I don't know what I'd do without you." He leaned forward and kissed her so hesitantly it was almost like they'd never kissed before. Her lips parted and she tried to draw closer to him but he stepped back.
"I really have to go now, Lily, it's, uh, Remus, uh, and."
"You don't want him to know you weren't there the whole time? Even though the other two are with him?" she asked.
"Yes, that's it. Uh, please don't tell him."
"All right. About tonight.?"
He smiled, "I'll deny it ever happened, I'll swear to my dying day that I was with Remus tonight."
She smiled back, "But I'll know the truth."
"I hope so. You don't know how much I hope you do know the truth... someday."
"James Potter, you really are a romantic fool, just wait 'til I tell all the girls."
"I'll deny it, remember?"
"Of course, but I'll still know." She turned and headed back towards the castle.
He went a little ways into the forest, but not so far that he couldn't keep her in sight. He watched her for a little, then sank down with his back against a tree.
Suddenly, the night didn't feel so warm. He drew his cloak about him and hugged his knees to his chest. He felt his athletic frame return to its more slender dimensions; felt the wild black hair lengthen, straighten and fall forward. Seventeen year old Severus Snape rested his chin on his knees, huddled under his cloak and felt his own warm tears slide down his face in the moonlight as the Polyjuice potion wore off.
