Rabbits

New Scene for Of Mice and Men

By: Amazonp aka Des

The sun showed brightly down on the shack.  To the side of the shack stood a chicken coop, and right against that were a couple of rabbit hutches.  Behind the old shack stood a rotten barn with a coral on the side, which a cow stomped around in.

Lennie came out of the ancient shack and walked across the farm to the rabbit hutches.  He muttered to them that he would be right back with their breakfast and continued on to the alfalfa patch.  He took a sack and filled it up with alfalfa and walked back to the rabbit hutches and placed the alfalfa in them. "George says we'd have to kills one of yous for dinner, but that's okay because George says you be throwen a many of litters!" He picked a red rabbit up and stroked it as he sat down and leaned against the chicken coop. He happily spoke to it, "Me an' George is livn' offa the fatta the lan' an' I getta ten' to yous."

The red rabbit spoke back to him, "You ain't doing a very good job!"

"What'd you mean?" Lennie was bewildered.

            "You ain't feed'n us!"

"What ya mean? I…I jus feed yous!"

            "Look at the other rabbits!"

Lennie got up and looked at the rabbits in the hutches.  There was no alfalfa and all the rabbits were not moving.  In fact they looked really thin like they were starved.  "No!" He looked back down at the red rabbit in his strong hands, and it was limp.  He shook it, "No! Wake up! Why'd you'd have to go an' die?  George ain't go an' let me ten' no rabbits no more."  He continued to shack the limp rabbit in rage.  "Why'd you go an' die!"  He dropped the rabbit, "I'd done a bad thing!  I'd done a bad thing!"  He screamed.

George jumped out of his bed and over to Lennie's, "Wake up Lennie! Wake up," he shook him awake.

Lennie opened his eyes.  He was in the bunk house, "I'd done a bad thing George!"

"It's okay Lennie it was just a dream!"

            "A dream?"

"Yes, Lennie," George sighed and settled on the edge of the bed.

"George, it was real! We had a farm with a house, an' a barn, an' a chicken coop, an' the rabbits, an' a alfalfa patch for them rabbits. An' I feed them rabbits, but the rabbit says I didn't an' they all died, George!"

"It wasn't real, Lennie." He got up and went to his bed, "Go back to sleep!"

"Okay George." Lennie turned over, "George?"

            "What?"

"Do I still gets to ten' them rabbits?"

"Yes Lennie! You ain't done nothing wrong. You'd just had a bad dream."
