A/N: Luke probably has more than one coffee maker, but for my story he only has one. :)
When Rory walked into Luke's diner after school to meet Lorelai. She found her mother sitting at the counter, giving Luke a puppy dog face. Luke in return, was grimacing at her.
"Hey guys. What's up?" Rory asked, as she walked over and sat down.
Before Lorelai could say anything, Luke said, "Your mother is once again in here bugging me for coffee."
"And?" Rory asked.
"He's not giving me any." Lorelai said in exasperation.
"Why not?" Rory asked.
"Because" Luke said.
This time Lorelai chimed in. "Because why?" She asked, a hint of a whine creeping into her voice.
"Just because" Luke said again.
By this time Rory could tell that he was stalling.
"Luke, we come in here several times a day for coffee. You always end up giving it to us. So what is the problem? What are you hiding?" Rory asked suspiciously.
Lorelai eyed him suspiciously too. " Yeah, what are you hiding?"
"Okay! Fine, I admit it." Luke said.
"Admit what?" Lorelai and Rory asked in unison.
"I am hiding something."
"What?" Rory asked.
"There is no coffee," Luke said.
"There's no what!!?" Lorelai shrieked.
"There is no coffee." Luke repeated.
Rory stared at him, her eyes growing big. "Why is there no coffee Luke??"
"Why don't you ask Jess that?" Luke said sarcastically.
"Ask me what?" Jess asked, as him came down the stairs.
Lorelai and Rory looked at him accusingly.
"What did you do to the coffee?" Rory asked him.
Jess just stared at her.
"What did you do to the coffee?" Rory repeated.
"I broke the coffee maker." Jess said, looking mildly amused.
Lorelai glared at him. "I knew I never liked you." she said, as she eyed him, like a bird eyeing its prey.
"How did you break it?" Rory asked him.
Jess opened his mouth to reply, but Lorelai held her hand up.
"No! I don't want to hear it."
Lorelai then fixed her attention on Luke.
"And what are you going to do about this?" Lorelai asked him.
Luke regarded her calmly. "I've already ordered another coffee maker."
"And just when will it get here" Lorelai asked.
"Um, it will be about a week."
"A week!" Lorelai shrieked.
"Why don't you just buy a temporary coffee maker?" Rory asked.
"Because, the kind that I use will be here in a week. Everyone can wait a week." Luke said.
Lorelai glared at him, but before she could fuss about it
being a whole week
Rory chimed in.
"Mom, don't we have an extra coffee maker that Luke could use, just until the other one gets here?"
Lorelai's glare slowly turned into a smile. "That's a great idea. This way everyone is happy. You don't have to buy a temporary coffee maker, and we still get our coffee. Agreed?" She asked Luke.
"Fine" he said gruffly.
