Disclaimer: Escaflowne doesn't belong to me, unfortunately. It belongs to all those other lucky people. The first two lines of the last stanza I think were inspired by someone somewhere, either a nursery rhyme or a religious song or something. If anyone recognizes it, please tell me. I'm curious to know where it comes from.

The Middle Child

I have always been

A shadow in the background

My sisters were both filled with light

I watched them in the darkness

I see the world in shades of gray and blonde

But no one ever noticed

Does my existence even count?

Perhaps I shall never find out

The two most important men

Looked past me to see them

One was my father, who forgot me

The other was the man I love

These two have always been at odds

Yet they have so much in common

They looked to the two who were beautiful and fair

And in their eyes, I was never there

Dear elder sister, with her ladylike grace

All shall miss your beautiful face

Baby sister, all dote on thee

However headstrong and reckless you may sometimes be

But what of the middle child, oh, I wonder

I doubt that anyone really loved her
