****Chapter 1***

He had never hated her. There had never been a single moment when he had wanted her to just…go away. Never a single moment when he just wanted to tell her to shut up, or just…push her off the bridge, like he had wanted to do so often with Jess. With Liz. With pretty much everyone he knew. With Rachel.

And he couldn't figure out why. He knew she annoyed him. Hell yeah, she annoyed him. But it was always a kind of cute, funny annoying.

So he just filed the 'Lorelai thing' away in that little filing cabinet in the back of his head, full of things he just really, really didn't want to think about.

Besides, it wasn't the way everyone thought it was. He didn't get weak at the knees when she pranced in with her hair all out and wavy and her short skirt on and her lips pouted. He wasn't always holding his breath, hoping that something would happen. Whatever 'something' is. And she definitely was not on his mind all the time.

He just, liked her, kind of. And she liked him, kind of. And it was all okay because there was a mutual understanding that they would always stay like that. They would always be there, when something else went wrong. Like, backup.

But then there was that night.

"If you hadn't brought him here, none of this would've happened."

            "This is my fault?"

"Yes, it is your fault!"

"Hey, I am sorry about Rory. You know I care more about her than I do myself, but at least you know where Rory is and at least you know that she's okay. Now, I have to find Jess and I have to make sure that he's okay, and if that cuts into your screaming time, well that's just too damn bad!"

"Go to hell!"

"Right back at ya!"

And that was it, right there. He knew he shouldn't have gotten angry. But he knew that there was nothing else he could have done.

Maybe it was because he got sick of being backup. Maybe he wanted to show her he wasn't going to follow her around like a little lost puppy all the time. And maybe there was no reason.

Maybe…maybe he finally realized that he had been holding his breath.
