Shannara
Dayel Eventine lay motionless in his bed, unable to sleep. He turned to look at the sleeping lump of his brother Durin across the room. His sleep is undisturbed by nightmares, Dayel thought to himself. He turned again and looked out the window. The moon shined bright, radiant, as did the stars. He wouldn't sleep this night, much like the last. The same nightmare had kept revisiting him. Dayel thought about his dream. It always started with someone outside his window knocking on it, wanting to come in. -knock, knock- Dayel sat upright instantly with the sound that so resembled the one of his dream. He stared out the window but saw nothing. He lay back down reluctantly, trying to shrug it off as his own imagination. He went back to thinking about his dream. After the knocking on the window came the rattle of the doorknob as something outside tried to get into his room. -jangle, jangle. rattle rattle- This time Dayel could not shrug off the sounds that he heard. He knew the doorknob was moving, but his Elf eyes could not penetrate the thick darkness. The sound of the doorknob had stopped now, and Dayel knew what was coming next before it did. He climbed out of bed and raced silently across the room to where Durin his brother lay sleeping.
