Remus Lupin stared out into the night, from his window. It was good to be
back at Hogwarts, after so many years. And yet..so many good memories,
yes..He grinned slightly to himself, remembering all the times he had sat
in the Gryffindor common room, laughing at his friends antics.
James.Peter..Sirius. As he thought of that particular name, his mind
clouded, his smile vanished. Sirius Black, ex marauder, ex best friend, but
still, after all these years, Remus had trouble convincing himself that
SIRIUS had betrayed James, that SIRIUS had killed Peter. He had been the
one person whom everyone knew- or thought they knew- would die a thousand
deaths, as the saying goes, rather than betray any of his friends. Remus
wasn't even that sure of himself- after all, if SIRIUS could turn, who
couldn't? James had been his absolute best friend, and he sold him out to
Voldemort. Something in the back of his mind was screaming NO! as it had 12
years ago, when Sirius had been convicted, although it had quieted since
then. A tiny voice whispered 'he never had a trial..' Remus shook his head.
He had convinced himself all those years ago that they would never have
sent a person to Azkaban for life if they were not absolutely certain of
guilt.right? 'God Sirius, how could you have done that to James? Lily?
Harry?'
Harry. He looked so much like James, it was uncanny, except for his
eyes.Lily's eyes. But he was so unlike both his parents, at least he was
until you dug deeper.then you found James's mischief, Lily's wit.but above
all that was the seriousness no 13 year old boy should have. Remus had
wanted desperately to talk to Harry as soon as he had seen him. Not as his
DADA professor, but as a close family friend. Someone who had known his
parents better then anyone he had ever known, even, perhaps, his aunt.
Remus had been shocked, at first- the last time he had seen him, Harry had
known him only as 'Moony', one of his favorite babysitters, one of his
parents' best friendswho loved him dearly. And how Harry had been back
then.a chubby, adorable baby who's green eyes had had enough mischief in
them to show everyone that he would truly be his father's son, a junior
Marauder. But now.how circumstances had changed that boy, although Remus
was sure that the mini-James was in there somewhere.it would just take some
cajoling to come out. Hell, it would take a LOT of cajoling. Still, it
could happen.
Thinking of Harry, what had happened to his life, Remus cursed Sirius
again. 'You bastard' he thought fiercely, 'you thought Harry would die too-
Prong's son! Our future protégé!-but look! He defeated your goddamned
master when he was ONE! And he lived, yes, but what a life! Voldemort out
for his life, no parents, living with those god awful Dursley's, having
people ogle at him wherever he goes. He was-still is- a helpless child, and
YOU destroyed everything for him!" Remus fumed, and still, he was furious
at himself- because he couldn't bring himself to hate Sirius Black! No
matter how hard he tried- and boy had he tried over the past decade or so-
no matter how much he reminded himself of every single thing that had gone
wrong in the lives of the people closest to him because of his supposed
best friend, he could- not- hate- him. Sirius, how could you?
