A red sun rises... Legolas Greenleaf thought to himself, walking slowly through what was left of a forest near to Helms Deep. Blood has been spilled this night...
Words spoken days ago, when he'd had no idea of the battle that was going to be fought. The battle that he had participated in. Participated and watched as so many died. Elves, Men, and Orcs alike.
Haldir...
The Lorien elf who had so unexpectedly come to the aid of the Rohirrim at the behest of Lord Elrond.
"Long ago we fought and died together. We come to honour that allegiance..."
And truly he had, fighting and dying alongside men.
Aragorn...
Legolas frowned sadly as he thought of the Ranger. Aragorn had been the most devastated of them all, when Haldir had died, his connection to the blond Elf had run deeper than Legolas had thought.
"We were lovers."
Aragorn's words, spoken to Legolas when they had finally found a chance to get away from everything and everyone. When Aragorn's grief at losing Haldir had finally come to the surface.
"We met many years ago, in Rivendell, and became lovers. No one knew but us. And now he's gone."
Legolas had held Aragorn then, trying to offer him some small measure of comfort, knowing that it would never been enough, the pain in Aragorn's eyes cutting him to the core.
"He would still be alive if not for me. It was my fault. If I hadn't called to him...distracted him..."
Legolas had tried to make Aragorn see that it was not his fault, that there was nothing he could have done, but no matter what reassurances he made, Aragorn still believed himself to be to blame.
"I loved him, Legolas. Loved him like I have no other, not even Arwen. And now he's gone. I am alone."
Then Legolas had kissed his forehead, and held him closer, trying to will away the pain that Aragorn had felt. He knew that it hadn't worked, but Aragorn had seemed slightly comforted, and had eventually fallen asleep in Legolas' arms. Legolas had left words unspoken though, words that he wished he could speak, but didn't have the heart to do so, for he knew that it was too soon.
I love you...
