Serenade
"No. Rhett.. I simply couldn't it wouldn't be proper. What about Frank?" Scarlett's conscious had finally caught up with her. Rhett drew away from their close embrace and leaned against the wall facing away from her.
Rhett could feel his heart contract, she had to accept him, and surely she was not so blind that she couldn't see past her childish love of Ashley. He smirked; no he wasn't going to give up on her so easily.
Scarlett stood a little distance away from Rhett trying to understand his silence.
Rhett turned to face Scarlett an inane grin spread cross his face that quite took Scarlett aback.
"Well my dear, that's alright with me."
Scarlett sighed, she'd gotten off lightly so far but knowing Rhett the way she did she had a feeling there was more to come.
Rhett still hadn't removed the silly grin from his face and Scarlett knew there were only two paths open to her burst into peels of giggles, which certainly not appropriate for a widow or faint, this however would probably result with her ending up in Rhett's arms. She took the Path strait through the heather and thistles.
Scarlett inclined her head in a questioning movement. "Well my dear Scarlett I should be going then shouldn't I."
Scarlett went to bed early that evening after saying goodnight to Melanie she retired to her room to think about her extraordinary meeting with Rhett.
She laid her head on her pillow and thought about being close to Rhe.. Was that music she could hear? She sat up abruptly and looked around the room as if expecting a herd of minstrels to suddenly burst into her room. For a few moments she listened to the music trying to work out where it was coming from. She trudges over to the window and undid the latch. She almost had a heart attack when she saw Rhett standing underneath the window playing a banjo.
Scarlett stared in a state of amazement she had not dreamed in a million years Rhett would do something like this.
Oh Scarlet (he crooned)
Won't you accept my fair hand in marriage? I'll be loving you for a lifetime I'll take you away in me Carriage.
And so unfortunately he continued in this vain.
As Rhett left he still had the grin plastered across his face, it had not moved unless to speak. He knew that he had left Scarlett feeling unutterably bewildered but it served her right for refusing him, or though he couldn't really blame her.
