Title: The Water of Life

Author: Kirsten

Spoilers: A Thousand Cranes

Summary: Abby's POV on the RING and what didn't happen.

Author's Notes:  I wrote this at 11:30 at night so please don't yell at me for it being bad!  Also, some of the parallels are corny but this is my thoughts on the ep.  And, as always, please give me some feedback.  I might do one for Carter.

PART 1:

"What did Maggie want?" Carter yells from the other room.

"She wanted to thank you for the ring." Crap!  Why did I say that?  I stare at the ring and then look up as the tea kettle starts to boil.  Maybe Carter's right, maybe people can change.  I glance back down at the ring.  Is this what he was going to ask me tonight?  Is this the reason why he bought out the whole restaurant?

I glance up as he comes back into the kitchen, his suit gone and replaced by a pair of jeans and a polo shirt.  He looks at the box in my hand and I met his eyes, "You weren't supposed to find that." He says.

"Is this why you said all of that stuff at the restaurant?"

"Yes," he says, simply, "I love you, Abby Lockhart and I want to marry you.  I don't want to change you; I just want to love you.  But you made it clear tonight that you don't feel the same way." He says, coming over and taking the box out of my hand.

I look up at him, "You caught me by surprise, John.  It's not that I don't want to marry you, it's just that I need time to think about it."

"Alright, fine.  I'll give you sometime to think." He says, closing the box and grabbing mugs out of the cabinet.

I turn to see that the tea kettle has steam coming out of the spout.  John doesn't want me to change for him, be better for him.  He just wants me, and in whatever shape or form that I am in.  Like the boiling water, it may change form but people still want it.  It mage change for the better or for the worse but people still want it.  Just like John.  I turn off the water and pour us each a cup of tea.  I put the kettle back and then sit down.  I put my hand over his and smile at him, "I'm ready."

He looks up in surprise, "You sure?"

"Would I be telling you yes if I wasn't?"

He smiles that cute little grin of his and looks me in the eyes, "Abagail Lockhart, will you marry me?"

            "Yes." I say and smile.

END PART 1.
