Dark Paw and Little Runner

By Samantha Borer

It was a dark cold night and Dark Paw was searching for his dinner. He trotted in a circle and sat down in the snow. Out of the corner of his eye he saw a white flash go by. He quickly got up and followed the tracks to the flash of light. The tracks were small, like a snow rabbits. Dark Paw was a big wolf and a measely little rabbit wouldn't be a good meal for him so he continued his search. He stopped under a tree and sniffed the air. He smelt the scent of a moose herd. Dark Paw ran to the nearest cliff and howled in triumph to his pack. Soon enough dark figures emerged out of the Shadows and padded up to Dark Paw. "You called?" said one of Dark Paw's fellow pack leaders. "Yes, I have found a large herd of caribou about 4 pastures away, it shouldn't take us long to get there." "Very well, we will continue soon but what is the plan?" "We will do what we normally do only I would like to kill all of them." "Very well." As the pack ran swiftly across the snow Dark Paw thought about how he was going to get all of the caribou. Even though he was a large wolf he knew that it would be hard to catch all 4 caribou, let alone get one. But in his heart he know that he could get one.

In the distant light of the moon dark shadows loomed over the caribou herd. "Mommy? What are those red eyeballs over there?" A young calf asked his mother. "Oh, they are just..just leaves." "Oh." The calf said happily as he ran to play with his friend. "Little Runner!" The mother caribou said as she ran toward a large male caribou. "Yes Lavender?" Little Runner said in a worried tone. "There are wolves near by. I can tell they are hungry." "I know to." Little runner said as he looked at the gleaming eyes in the distants. "Runner! How dare you not think of the children. Wolves are hungry savage beast that have killed many of our species. You give no thought into your answer." "They do not want to kill the children Lavender, they want to kill me." Little Runner said as the gleaming eyes came closer. "Why you?" Lavender cried. "They seek revenge. I do recall one time when I was a wee little calf our leader, Little Hunter, killed the wolves leader and I remember a small wolf saying when I become leader I will kill your pack leader, see how you feal. He paused for a moment and continued. They pack that has chosen us for there food is the pack with the little wolf." "But why?" "You won't understand the rest." Little Runner said softely and urged Lavender to gather the herd and move them away from the savage fight that was about to begin.

As Dark Paw watched the caribou he remembered that it was the herd that had killed his father when he was small. How much he wanted to get revenge on them but never managed to find them, now was his chance. He was going to kill the leader once and for all. But one problem was, their leader was a old friend of his, Little Runner.
