Still Human

What I thought Kelly must have been thinking after the incident on the Covenant ship. It might seem a bit sappy, but it's more of a deep insight on her thoughts, and a very heavily implied romance.
Halo and it's characters are not mine.
Kelly looked at the Covenant ship burst, the fiery explosions flashing across the deep void of space. It reflected off her helmet's visor. There it went, blown to pieces. Their mission was accomplished...it was worth the trouble. But somehow...it didn't feel right.
They had left one behind. Yes, one, but that person was one of the most important in her life. Through the years, she had been trained, trained to be a perfect soldier. She had gone through countless preparation missions, capture the flag, the obstacle course, the augmentation...and it all prepared her for this.
She was a soldier, able to kill and do it efficiently. But...she had not been trained to put away all emotions. She realized this more than ever right now. The moment she realized that Sam had to be left behind, something inside her stirred. Her emotions...they did not allow her to accept his death willingly. She knew that it had to be done, it was for the good of the people, but still...
She held onto John, but that didn't give her any comfort. John was her friend, and so was Sam, but now...now she felt as if he was something much much more. Closing her eyes, she remembered her first meeting with him. He was a pretty normal kid, much taller, yes, but he had the air of most kids their age. Then, as the years passed, they remained close friends. They talked, played games, sparred, almost everything they did was done together.
Didn't they say that they'd always be friends, the three of them, always? Weren't they going to stay in the same squad, John their leader, and kick the Covenant forces out of their universe? Didn't they???
It seemed like ages ago that they were talking, laughing, joking together like usual. It had only been a few hours in actuality, but she already missed it. She missed his voice, his laugh, his overall personality. But most importantly she missed him.
Her eyes smarted as she watched the ship blow, the explosions still going, but dying out now. So...he was really gone. He would never come back, but she still had her memories, and that single soft look he gave her before silently whispering, "Good bye..."
Staring at the now empty stretch of black space, she whispered under her breath, "Good bye...Sam...". And a single tear rolled down her cheek. No one would know about it, not even John. No matter how many years passed, her feelings would stay the same. She couldn't lie to herself, that'd be stupid. Even Sam's death could not mask the truth from her. She had loved Sam, and she always would...
^^' That was my first try at a one-shot fic like that without any OCs. I'm pretty satisfied with it, and for those who kinda noticed it...yes, I AM a Sam x Kelly shipper. Poo you if you don't like that.
