Cookies for Mommy

The cook came in the next morning at six o clock, to see Lex Luthor, in flannel pajamas, with his head in a cabinet. He came out with a grin and a wire whisk in his hand. "Mr. Luthor, there is no need for you to cook. I." Lex turned and looked at the cook. "Thank you, but I am going to make cookies by myself today." "Cookies, sir?" "Yes, cookies. It's Mommy's birthday today, and I'm making her chocolate chip cookies. They're her favorite. I always make them for her." A tear rolled down his cheek as he choked out the last sentence. The cook took the hint to leave, shaking his head in wonder as soon as he was out the door.
Later, a flour-covered Lex with oven-mitts and an apron looked proudly at his cookies. Two dozen chocolate chip cookies for Mom. His mind flashed back to the only happy memory he had of his father, many, many years before.

Lionel Luthor sneaked out of bed, giving his wife a kiss on the forehead before. He went into his son's bedroom and shook him. "Son. Son, wake up. It's Mommy's birthday. We're going to make cookies." Five-year-old Lex rubbed his eyes. "What Daddy?" "Cookies. It's your mother's birthday, son, come on." Lex grinned and hopped sleepily out of bed, and his father ruffled his mop of curly red hair before taking his hand. Lex giggled as Lionel held a finger to his lips as they passed Lilly's door.
In the kitchen, Lex stood on a stool stirring as Lionel poured the ingredients in. He watched as his father put large clumps of dough on two cookie trays and slid them into the oven. As they cleaned up, Lex asked thoughtfully, "Daddy? How old is Mommy?" Lionel grinned slyly and kneeled down, whispering in his ear as if he was sharing some secret knowledge and whispered, "Old." Lex giggled.
Lilly watched as her two favorite men came into her room, the younger riding piggyback on his father's back. Lionel had a box in his hand, which he handed Lilly. "A gift, my lady." Lilly's eyes went wide. "Cookies? For me? Thank you!" She embraced both men, and Lex whispered in her ear, "Daddy said you were old." Lilly gave Lionel the "You're-in-trouble-Mister" look as she said, "He did, did he?" "Come here, you!" Lionel growled as he tickled his son.

Lex made his way to his mother's grave, cookies under one arm, white lilies in the other. He was puzzled at the sight of someone else, kneeling at it, although he could tell who. When he got closer, it became clear. "Lex?" "Dad." Lex looked at the box of cookies laid at the grave, and he set his own by it. Then the Luthor men embraced in the first real hug they'd had in years.
