Broken
By: Epyon Zero
Quite possibly the most disturbing thing about the end of the world was that it
was so empty. No birds, no trees, nothing, only blood-red water and the narrow
strip of sand.
Shinji Ikari was well aware of this however; since he was the last living
person, or thing for that matter, on the face of the Earth. Instrumentality had
seen to that. Mankind had finally done that which so many had feared it would
do, destroy itself. Yet, it hadn't come in a wash of nuclear fire or a war to
end all wars, it had come about through simple desire. His Father's desire to
be re-united with his Mother and that of 12 men who had believed that through
the total merger of the human race that would become like Gods. But neither had
happened. Yes man had merged into one massive group consciousness, but all that
had contained was a shadow, an illusion of life.
Shinji had rebelled against this imitation, and in doing so consigned the world
to what it was now, a ruin, a vast orange red sea of the stuff life. And yet,
he himself felt nothing, but he knew he should. Grief, rage, loss, fears, something.
But there was nothing. He was empty, as
empty as the world now was. It was if the part of him that was capable of
feeling had been scooped out, or drained away, leaving only an empty, broken
shell.
So Shinji walked, down the sand, which seemed to stretch forever. The only sign
of his passage and continued existence a small set of footprints in white sand.
The only sound aside from the quiet swish of the waves his shuffling step and
low breathing.
The broken Child walked in a broken world, searching for something anything
that could fill the hollow place in his soul, but it was not to be.
So he kept walking.
Author's Notes: Odd mood, needed to write this, can't say much else.
