summary: After an assault, Rei is left horribly scarred, and he wonders if Kai will still love him

A MOMENT IN TIME

Rei sat in the king size, canopied bed in the middle of the vacant,

large, ornate and lonely room. The windows on the 3rd floor room had

been drawn shut, covered by heavy curtains that blocked out the

sunlight. The room was dark and gloomy, as was the rest of

Mistlethwaite Manor, Kai's expansive and expensive, lonely mansion

he'd inherited upon his grandfather's death.

Rei snuggled deeper into the thick and luxurious mound of blankets

and pillows, which supported his back and helped him to sit up. He

sighed and closed his beautiful, golden eyes.

He'd been confined to this bed for a month....ever since he'd been

released from the hospital after Bryan attacked him. He'd been so

brutally beaten that he'd ended up in a coma, but most of the damage

had been just flesh wounds. Flesh wounds that left horrid scars upon

his body, marring his once beautiful, smooth, and blemish free skin.

Tears stung his eyes, coursing down his soft cheeks and dripping onto

his drawn up knees. He opened his beautiful amber eyes, which shined

with his crystal tears, and stared down at the snap shot cradled on

the silken comforter.

The picture was of him and Kai. The stoic blader had his arms

wrapped protectively around Rei, who was snuggled against his chest

and beaming, the happiest boy on earth. His skin was so flawless, so

perfect.....and now.....

Rei meowed and flung the photo across the room in a pique of

frustration, then broke down sobbing. He was so scarred; he was

ugly. His face had a slash that ran from his right temple, across

his nose, and down to his left jaw bone, and chunks of flesh were

missing from his back and along his torso. But....those wounds could

be hidden....his face....his face.....was ugly.

Rei hugged himself, shaking violently and laid back, pulling some

plush pillows out from behind his back, then curled into a fetal ball

and sobbed his heart out.

He didn't hear the door creak open, or a pair of crimson eyes watch

him, their ruby depths filled with pain and hurt at seeing him suffer

so. Then the calculating eyes darted momentarily to the rejected

photograph.

Kai bent down, picked it up, then went over and laid behind Rei,

wrapping his arms around him and pulling him tight against his

chest. Rei mewed and tried to struggle, but soon gave in and buried

his face in Kai's warmth, hiding his scarred fasage.

Kai ran a hand through his kitten's loose and flowing black hair,

then cupped his cheek and tilted it upwards, kissing his tears away

lovingly. "Kitten, you are as beautiful now as you where then. And I

love now, as I did then. More so, even."

Rei lay quiet in his koi's strong arms, his amber depths shining with

trust and love. Even with the scar, he was still beautiful to Kai.

Kai rolled over, pulling Rei on top of him and accidentally knocking

over the picture of a smooth, unblemished Rei and Kai, and it floated

gently to the floor.
