He is five years old and he no longer remembers his father's face. He sits on the edge of the bed, shaking the sand from his hair, watching the tears stream down his mother's cheeks as she scrubs the jam from his mouth. He does not know what has upset her. He did not see the sunlight reflect on a white sail on the horizon, nor did he see her face fall when the pale blur resolved itself into just another of Círdan's ships. He is five years old, and he does not understand tales of vengeance and sea longing.
