Have you ever seen the beauty, the longing, the acute pain that shadows the face of someone who is dying? Yes? No? Then you must picture that look, that refined gaze that treads the thin line between love and hate, on the face of someone who knows he is dying.

Slowly, her eyes opened.
Slowly..Slowly.
Her breath came in short gasps.
Her hands clenched and unclenched in a rhythmic pattern.
Her senses fogged over, her eyes growing dim.
She continued to breathe, though it was harder now.
She forced herself into a sitting position.
His eyes opened wider at this movement.
She struggled to raise her rapidly dimming eyes to his.
The perpetual smirk that donned his face faltered.
Ribs broken by the hard fall began to fail her.
She gasped at the pain, fingernails forming moon-shaped lines of ruby where they latched against her skin.
"You-"
Her statement was broken by a series of coughs, blood spattering the back of the hand she raises to cover her mouth.
His eyes widened, his brows came together.
She raised her face one last time, her soul shining clearly through the rapidly darkening eyes..
He frowned, surprised and not pleased.
She latched her dark eyes onto his mismatched ones.
"You.."
Her hands tightened their death-grip on themselves.
"Have.."
He stared, anger and sorrow at his actions growing.
"No."
She bit back a gasp as fractured bones protested this last defiance.
"Power."
His face darkened, her eyes shone.
"Over."
He balled his fists, her face challenging him to do his worst.
"Me...."
Her voice faded at the last word. She toppled back, sightless eyes staring unknowing at his mismatched ones. He sobbed onto her still chest, saying the words he could never say during her life.
"I love you."
