Mother's Fault
Chapter One: Empress Novia
Mother what have you done?
The aging Empress Novia raised her head from the papers she was reading through, as her daughter entered.
Katralla, I am really quite busy. Can this not wait til later?
No Mother it can not! I demand to know what you have done!
Novia raised her body from the chair and stepped around the desk to where her daughter stood.
Princess Katralla watched as her mother approached her. She was filled with determination. She would not leave this room until she had the answers to her questions. She was sick of her mother still treating like a child, even though Katralla should have been Empress by now.
You demand to know do you daughter? Well then of course by all means, go right ahead.
Swallowing the feeling of nervousness that was filtering through her shock, Katralla spoke.
I am pregnant Mother. But I suspect you already know this.
Yes, I knew.
Katralla had an insane urge to stomp her foot in annoyance.
Mother, the only man compatible with my DNA has not stepped foot on this planet for over 90 cycles! So therefore, I demand to know what you had done to me.
Expressing her amusement at her daughter's state of mind was not usually one of Novia's personality traits. She loved her daughter, cared about her; she would never do that. But today she did let a small chuckle.
Katralla dear, come sit. She pulled on her daughter's hands until they were both seated on the window seat, over looking the palace gardens.
You see, I missed having a baby around the palace. And Joceryn is almost 10 cycles old. I thought that it would be good for her to have a baby brother or sister.
Pulling her
hands away from her mother's grasp Katralla snorted.
What, so that he or she can poison Joceryn's DNA as well?
Hush child. That's all water under the bridge now. Besides, it's not polite to speak of the dead. Now, as I was saying, I wanted another grandchild. So I got the doctor to pull out the samples we took from Crichton. Then he took one of your eggs, fertilised it and then placed it back it take.
And when was all this done?
Novia smiled as she noticed her daughter and heir was now acting as a future Empress and not a spoiled little Princess.
A few momens back at your physical.
And what, pray tell, am I to tell Tyno?
Novia snorted and turned her head away from Katralla's pleading eyes.
Tell him to play the happy father. I don't really care Katralla. Until I am dead, I still rule this planet and it's people. That includes Regent Tyno and even you my dear daughter. So I will do as I see fit.
Novia rose from the window seat and walked over to her desk.
If you excuse me, I still have work to do.
Katralla stood and walked over to the desk. She had been put in her place for now. Bowing deeply she removed herself from the office.
End Chapter One.
