Summary: The Gods said that the Millennium Puzzle held a great prodigy within its many mazes, and so the mortal Yugi Motou accepted it. But what they did not mention was that there is no gift without a curse.
"The Start"
"Okay, bye!" Yugi waved to his friends as he began to walk towards his own home. Now that he was alone, he could admire the puzzle he had just finished. It was a beautiful puzzle that his grandfather had given to him, and he loved it. No one knew except him that it was finished it yet, but Yugi wanted to surprise his Grandpa. He had finished it during break and wanted to show everybody, but his only remaining family came first.
Yugi held the puzzle in his hands, and it felt warm. Suddenly, it began to glow softly, gently and invitingly. Yugi's eyes widened, and he stopped walking to concentrate fully on it. A voice appeared in his head.
{Hello, mortal. I am the Pharaoh of the Millennium Puzzle. I see the Gods have chosen you to bless with my soul.} Yugi trembled as the magic flowed over him in rippling waves. Somehow, he felt someone smile slowly. {Do not fear. I am your friend.}
Yugi, terrified, whispered in a dazed voice, "Where are you?"
{I share your soul.} Was the reply. {I will always be here.}
Yugi was too amazed to do anything but mouth a "wow". He felt someone chuckle again. {You may call me Yami, dark, as I am the darker of you.}
Yugi swallowed, and then sent, {Hello, Yami. Nice to meet you.} He gulped, waiting for a reply.
Yami must have nodded, because Yugi sensed it. And then he was gone. Yugi couldn't detect him anymore, but decided he must have gone to sleep.
"Wow..." Now his voice returned. Yugi grinned from ear to ear, and skipped the rest of the way home.
Lapse of Time...
Alone in his room, Yugi sat doing his homework. The birds were chirping merrily outside.
Suddenly, Yugi couldn't hear anything anymore. A deathly silence settled upon his room. Yugi looked up, alarmed, but saw that the bird living in the tree by his window was still chirping. Only he couldn't hear it.
Yugi shook his head, and a buzzing rang in his ears. Frightened, he shook his head again, but the buzzing only grew louder. Yugi gasped and stood up abruptly, knocking his chair down in the process.
The buzzing increased in volume, and filled Yugi. He could not feel anything but the hum drilling into his bones.
Yugi tried to scream, but no sound came out. He collapsed to his knees, hands clutched over his ears, trying to make it go away. Anything to make it go away!
"IT HAS BEGUN." A noise rang out. Yugi ignored it as he tried desperately to stop the ringing shaking him.
Then, as quickly as it had began, it stopped. Everything was normal again. Yugi blinked.
"Must have fallen asleep and had a nightmare," He decided and righted his chair. The birds went on chirping as he continued his work.
Meanwhile...
Several black figures stood watching Yugi from an orb. "Now," one of them said, and then all of them nodded.
With one sentence, the beginning of Yugi Motou's decline was marked. Their voices in unison, they whispered, "It has begun."
And indeed, it had.
Kaehimi: Yet another new idea...
