Title: Moving On
Rating: PGish
Summary: David and Race talk.
Necessary Disclaimer: I own nothing. Disney owns the characters and the copyrights. The plot owns me at the moment.
Author's Notes: The first bit o' fic that I've been willing to publically share. It's actually a snippet from a longer piece I'm working on. But I wanted to share something with the community and to get some feedback. I'm not incredibly comfortable with my writing skills. This is unbetaed. Oh, yeah, implied slash.
Feedback: Yes, please! Here at ff.net or at talliahp@yahoo.com.
Race brought it up abruptly. "He's not coming back."
David was startled. His mind raced with possibilities. Had Jack contacted Race? If so, why hadn't Jack contacted him? What if Jack really was dead? He desperately tried to maintain an air of innocent bewilderment. "What?" He hoped that Race couldn't see the desperation in his eyes.
"Jack. He's not coming back, Davey."
"Oh, Jack. Wow, I haven't thought about him in years." I've thought of nothing but him for years. David hoped that Race couldn't see through him. Couldn't see how much he still thought about Jack, how much he still hurt.
Race blinked, and with an infuriating flatness responded. "If he hasn't come back yet, he isn't going to come back at all. You need to move on. There are other things in life."
Jack is life. David hated that Race could speak about Jack without being overcome by emotion. He wanted to cry. He wanted to laugh. "I don't know what you're going on about. It's been years since Jack. I moved on long ago."
David met Race's eyes. They both knew the truth. David had never moved on. Every time there was a knock on the door, he expected it to be Jack. Every time an unknown letter arrived for him, he expected it to be from Jack. Every time he stepped into a crowded room, his eyes automatically scanned for Jack's face. Every morning David still woke up believing that Jack would come home.
Race gave up, it was a battle that he couldn't fight. "Alright, Davey."
A quick nod, and they had moved on to safer topics. A letter Race had received from Kid Blink. The money Race had lost at the track this week. Every second was agony; David left as quickly as he could.
