The lingering emptiness that accompanied his emergence into the world of the living weighed heavily tonight, and Shido sighed. Outside, the shadows were gathering rapidly; he could feel them creeping across the ground as night swallowed the city.
Dark hunger rose in the depths of his soul, echoed out there somewhere.
Come back to me, Shido.
The memory of his maker's words and his strangely gentle kiss haunted Shido, and he burned with hatred and shameful longing.
"Never, Cain," he whispered, and buried his hands in his long hair as he tried desperately to forget he'd once been in love.
