Sunset
The woman stood on the cliff and watched as the waves hit the rocks. She looked ahead and watched as the sun came down to meet the water. She could only think of the life she chose and the one she didn't. Which was the right one? Would she on day be happy? Would she one day sit n a chair and rock a child of her own while a husband stood by her side, as happy as she was? Only time could tell what the future would hold.
As the sun continued to sink behind the sea, footsteps could be heard as they got closer. She knew who it was. It could only be him. He stopped to the side of her, but she continued to stare at the sea. They stood in silence. She could feel him staring at her. What was he thinking? Finally, after a couple of minutes, he broke the silence.
"It's beautiful," he said. She could tell he hadn't talked in a while because his voice was hoarse.
"Yeah. It is," she stated in a low voice, almost like a whisper as if her voice would shatter everything around her.
As more minutes passed by, it began to get chilly and the stars began to glimmer and shine as part of the sun was still barely visible. She felt him staring at her again and a few seconds later he lightly grasped her hand. She looked over at him. The man who had been in her life for so long now. He was basked in the orange-red glow of the sun. He had a slight smile on his face, but as he began to look in her eyes, the smile faded. A look of slight concern had now crossed his face. As she looked into his eyes, she saw something different. For once she could not read his eyes. He must have noticed the look of confusion because he spoke again.
"What?"
"Your eyes. There's something different."
They stood there, staring into eachother's eyes for what seemed like hours, but in reality just seconds. Then, as slowly as he had come, his hand slipped away from hers and he slowly backed up and walked away. His long shadow following. She was left alone now. Standing on a cliff was a woman gazing as the man she loved secretly walked away. As she watched his figure fade into the hazy distance, she turned back and watched the remainder of the sunset. Then, she too faded off into the distance while the waves continued to crash against the rocks and the picture perfect sunset faded away just as they did.
