Chapter 13: Close Encounters
The nest two weeks went by fast, if you were Courtney. She was excited about the first Quiditch practice of the season. But before she and the others could go to that, they had to go to Potions. Yay.
Before Snape entered, everybody was chattering away. But as soon as he did, they all shut up, except for Courtney who said to Emma, 'Slytherins are like slinkies: it's always fun to watch them fall down the stairs,' which made all the Gryffindors laugh.
'Detention, Miss Granger,' Snape said to her. But Courtney retaliated by saying, 'Excuse me, Professor? Your village just called, they're missing their idiot.'
There was a chorus of 'ohhhs' and some scattered clapping. 'Miss Granger, I'm not the idiot, you are.' Snape said without looking up from what he was doing.
'Well, I'm blonde. What's your excuse?' Courtney said boldly with a smirk on her face.
'30 points from Gryffindor.' Snape spat. 'Now, get out you books and turn to page 72. Then get out your advanced supplies. Today we're going to learn about the Silencing Solution, which is the opposite of the Veritaserum, or the Truth Potion for all you dumb blondes.' Snape looked directly at Courtney, who scowled.
Harry noticed her scowl and whispered, 'Courtney, you've already got detention and have taken 30 points from Gryffindor. Don't make it worse.'
She grunted and pulled out her potions ingredients. She also pulled out a tiny piece of parchment, scribbled out a note and handed it to Ron, who was sitting in front of her. The note read,
Snape can go screw a tree.
Ron looked back at her and she smiled mischievously. He wrote something and handed it back to her.
Courtney! You naught little child! U no ur not supposed to talk like that about teachers.dang.that sounded jus like Emma..scary
Yeah, very scary. but what can I say; its true, no?
Extremely true. You know if Snape ever found this, we would be dead meat-ola.
Yep.
Do you even care??
Nope.
Figures.well, me niether
You spelled 'neither' wrong
Shut up.
How can I, this is a piece of paper!
Stop writing then!!!!!
Fine.
Fine.
Ron handed the note back to Courtney one last time and she rolled her eyes. Emma had seen Ron hand her the note, so she elbowed Courtney and hissed, 'Pay attention!'
'Fine!' Courtney practically screamed.
'Miss Granger, it would be better for you and your fellow Gryffindors if you didn't continually annoy everyone, including myself. Double detention,' Professor Snape said while glaring daggers at Courtney, Ron and Emma, 'and detentions for Mister Weasley and Miss Potter.'
'What a butt-muncher,' Courtney whispered to no one in particular.
Snape walked over to Courtney and said in her face ,' What did you just say to me?'
Courtney put her most innocent face and said sarcastically, 'Nothing, sir, honest!'
'Courtney Granger, would you like to be suspended for the rest of the year?'
Whoa, he is really ticked at me! Courtney thought to herself. This wouldn't be the best time to point out that I would have no place to go if I was suspended. 'No, sir,' she said out loud timidly.
'Then you best shut your sarcastic mouth,' Snape hissed. He glared at Courtney one last time, and headed back to the front of the dungeon.
Cedric looked at his twin and put his "haha-you-got-detention-and-I-didn't- " face on. Courtney looked back at him and put her "if-you-keep-looking-at- me-like-that-I'm-gonna-hurt-you" face on. Cedric looked away.
*~*~*
'Today has been one of the worst days of my life!!!' Emma screeched as she, Harry, Courtney, Cedric, Hermione and Ron walked out of the dungeons. 'First, it's the first day of Quidditch practice of the season and I'm not on the team! Second, I have hall duty-' she and Hermione were the Gryffindor prefects '-so I cant watch my "replacement" to see if she's better than me, which I know she's not. And third, Miss I'm-so-cool-I-can- make-fun-oft-the-teachers-and-not-get-away-with-it lands me detention!' She shot a glare at Courtney and Harry grinned at the irony of it all.
'Well, at least Courtney got double detention, even though I got detention in the process,' Ron said sharply.
'I'm right here, ya know!' Courtney shouted in Ron's ear. 'And don't think I'm happy about landin' y'all detention, because I am so not.'
Harry, Cedric and Hermione snickered and Emma and Ron yelled, 'Shut up!' Courtney said nothing. (A/N: Lol HOLES MOMENT!!!! Now alls I gotta do is hit a teacher with a shovel and then I'll be jus like Zero!!!!) Then, suddenly, with a troubled look on her face, she ran ahead of the others in the direction of the library.
'Why would she go to the library right before Quidditch practice?' Hermione wondered.
'Why would she want to?' Ron said incredulously.
Emma looked at Harry, and Harry knew what she was thinking. He nodded in the direction that Courtney and Emma said, 'We.need to go get a book from the library. Bye.'
She and Harry sprinted to the library. When they finally got there, completely breathless, they found Courtney on one of the school's magi- tops. She looked both excited and disgusted at the same time.
'Malfoy has a milpreve!' she said quietly so that Madam Pince wouldn't kill them.
The twins looked at each other hesitantly. 'You're-you're kidding right?' Harry asked.
Before Courtney answered, she looked at her watch and gasped. 'We have ten minutes to get to the Quidditch pitch!' She jumped out of her chair, ran past Harry and Emma and headed out of the library.
Harry turned to Emma and said, 'Who cares about hall duty? You're coming to Quidditch practice.'
Emma looked shocked. 'What? Harry, I know you don't know what it's like to be a Prefect, but we have responsibilities. I can't forget about my school and go see some twit who doesn't know how to fly a broom disgrace the name of Gryffindor Quidditch!'
Courtney stopped running and turned around to see what Harry's reaction would be. 'Don't care!' he shouted quietly, 'You're coming with us!'
'Ha. I'd like to see you make me.'
Harry looked at Courtney, who began to laugh maniacally. 'Ohhhh, you should not have said that!!' she said while still laughing.
Emma blanched. 'W-what do you mean by that?' Courtney laughed again. Emma frowned, turned around and started to walk away.
Courtney sniggered and pulled her milpreve out from under her uniform. She said something quietly, closing her eyes and clutching her special gem. Harry looked at Emma, who had suddenly started walking back towards Courtney and himself, instead of away from them.
'Hey!' Emma shouted, not caring if Madam Pince killed them anymore, 'What did you do?!'
Courtney smiled and said slyly, 'A little bit of magic!!'
Harry smiled, and Emma pulled out her wand and whispered, 'Accio milpreve.' Courtney's leather necklace magically broke and it flew into Emma's outstretched hand. 'Ha.' She sneered.
'HEY THAT'S MINE!!!' Courtney yelled and she pulled he wand out as Emma started walking away. Courtney automatically looked at her watch (As she so often did when she pulled out her wand) and gasped before she could curse Emma, who said,
'I'm not going to Quidditch.'
Courtney grunted and muttered, 'Fine. Your loss. I guess you'll never know if Riddle's better than you.' Emma said nothing as she disappeared down the corridor to Gryffindor tower.
'You know,' Harry commented, 'She still has your milpreve.'
Courtney swore loudly, then remembered why she had gasped a few minutes earlier. 'OMG, we only have 5 minutes to get to the pitch!'
'Forget Emma, you can get it back later,' Harry said hastily, 'Lets go.' They raced out of the library as fast as they could.
*~*~*
'Potter, Granger. You're late,' Professor McGonagall snapped as Harry and Courtney ran onto the field.
'S-sorry,' Harry panted, 'lost track of.of time.whew..'
McGonagall frowned down at the both of them. 'May I suggest wearing a watch?'
'I am wearing a watch!' Courtney cried indignantly. Harry nudged her to be quiet.
'All right, let's get started!' McGonagall said excitedly, ignoring Courtney's watch remark. 'Here's what we'll do. You all will play a mock game of Quidditch, and from what I see in all the players, I will then make my decision on who will be this years captain. These volunteer students will play the opposing team.' She nodded to the 7 students who didn't make the team, minus Emma.
The game then began. It wasn't a very long game, as the Seeker on the opposing team wasn't very good and Harry was just as good as he ever was. Too bad Emma isn't on the team anymore, he thought to himself.
When the game ended, they all flew down and gathered around McGonagall. 'Well done, all of you,' she said in a superior voice, 'You all did very well, but one person stood out more than the others.' McGonagall paused and they all waited apprehensively for her to continue.
'Congratulations to your new team captain, Veronica Riddle.' McGonagall winced at her name.
Harry, Ron, Cedric and Courtney gasped in horror and shock. 'No freakin' way,' Ron breathed.
Riddle smirked. 'Who's better than Princess Potter now?' she bragged haughtily.
'Okay, she's goin' down,' Harry said bitterly and he made a move for Riddle, but Courtney and Ron held him back.
'Harry, don't,' Courtney warned, 'There's a teacher right there!'
As soon as Courtney had said that, McGonagall said, 'Well. That concludes practice for today. Good job, all of you. You may go back to your common room now.' McGonagall walked away, and so did Riddle, except McGonagall wasn't nearly as haughty.
Ron picked up a stone. 'Can I chuck this at her?' he asked no one in particular.
Harry nodded and said, 'Sure, go ahead.'
'Ron, don't you dare,' Courtney snapped in a very un-Courtney-like way. 'She'd probably kill you on the spot.'
'Hey, Courtney,' Ron said blandly as he threw the rock back down on the ground, 'I wasn't listening to Snape earlier.when do we have to do our detentions?'
'I dunno, I wasn't listening either,' Courtney answered, 'We can ask Emma later. She'd definitely know.' *~*~*
When Harry, Ron, Courtney and Cedric entered the common room, they saw Hermione and Emma in a corner doing homework. Hermione looked up at them when they walked over and said with a sigh, 'Hi guys. How was practice?'
Emma's hand clenched around her quill even harder at the mention of practice.
'RIDDLE'S BLOODY CAPTAIN!!' Courtney shrieked, making everybody jump.
'Don't swear,' Emma scolded without looking up.
Courtney ignored Emma's rebuke and continued ranting, 'McGonagall chose her over everybody else! For captain!!!!'
'Well, she's obviously talented,' Hermione pointed out tonelessly.
'But she's not, that's the thing,' Harry contradicted, 'I watched her. Emma's a lot better than her.'
Emma snorted, and Ron sat next to her, gripping his hair. 'I won't tolerate being on a team with her,' Ron snarled through clenched teeth, 'whether or not she's talented-'
'Yes, I'm sure it'll be strenuous for you,' Emma snorted again.
'I would rather be on a team with Malfoy than with her!' Courtney wailed and she flopped down onto the couch next to Ron.
'Then transfer to Slytherin,' Emma grumbled.
Courtney looked appalled. 'Why would I do that?' she exclaimed puzzledly. Emma glared at her and she rolled her eyes.
'Oh yeah,' Harry said, remembering something, 'Emma, I think you have something that belongs to Courtney.'
Emma glowered at Harry, shoved a few books away and revealed Courtney's precious necklace.
'Hey, what's that?' Ron asked, clamoring to get a better look at the milpreve.
'Some stupid keepsake,' Emma growled, 'I'm going to bed. Night.' She gathered her books and left the common room.
Ron watched her leave, looked at Courtney and Harry suspiciously and asked again, 'No seriously. What is that thing?'
'Erm.keepsake. Yeah. A stupid keepsake, like she said,' Courtney said nervously.
Harry looked at Ron to see what his reaction to such a vague answer would be, but, fortunately, he just shrugged and said, 'Okay. Whatever. I'm going to bed, too. Night.' He yawned and left the common room.
Courtney sighed and looked at Harry, some-what sheepish. 'That .was close.' Harry nodded. 'Almost too close.'
