Two Roads Diverged

Disclaimer: Rayearth is not mine. Yadda dadda dadda. This fic is utterly, utterly shounen-ai. If that bothers you, what are you doing here?

So I had this thought:I was watching the anime, and there is this one scene where...well, you'll see. And I'm a rabid Hikaru/Lantis/Eagle fan, so be warned! Oh, one more thing:I've created my own manga/anime mix of how I want the series to go. Which means: No Debonair, Eagle lives, et cetera BUT I will refer to anime scenes. Live with it..or not. Oh, and just for reference: ~*sentence*~ is Lantis remembering things Eagle said. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

It's come. What I always knew would find me. It's fate. My fate, my destiny.

~*Fate, fate, fate. That's what you say to explain everything.*~

Yes, you laugh. I told you about my destiny years ago, and you laughed. But your eyes didn't, and I wonder if maybe you saw what we would become. That day, perhaps, the future cast a shadow you could just barely see.

~*It's not that important, Lantis.*~

Yes it is. You were wrong, don't you see? You were wrong about this. About me. About us. About them. About everything.

~*It's not your fault, Lantis. Don't blame yourself.*~

It was my fault! You don't know, I didn't tell you, what made me leave. I ran away, you know that, but you don't know why. You never asked. I could love you just for that, everything else aside. You waited until I would decide to tell you. I never did.

~*You didn't know. There was nothing you could have done.*~

I did know! I left because I knew, because I saw the look on my brother's face. I knew what he was going to do, and I let him. I left because I couldn't face my brother when he was doing something he believed in. I saw the looks that passed between them when they thought nobody was looking, and I couldn't be sure it was right to attack him, my own brother. I was the only one who knew for sure. Clef suspected, I think, but too late, too late to stop them if he could, too late for him to do what I couldn't.

I came to Autozam to escape my fate. You were wrong about that, too, there's no escaping fate. I flew all the way here to avoid it, and found it waiting for me.

~*I believe a person makes their own destiny.*~

Did you know, or suspect, when I said that, just what my fate is? You must have figured it out by now, sitting on that battleship waiting.

It's to choose between honor and love.

It's funny, you know, I do make my own destiny, you were right. How did you know? My fate, my doom, is that choice. And I don't know which path goes where I want to end.

~*That's my Lantis! Always doing things differently, never taking the easy path.*~

You were my easy path, didn't you know? Coming to Autozam, finding you-I thought that if I stayed away until it was over, I could come back the same. How wrong I was! I'm not the same, and I don't know where home is anymore. You didn't come just to look for me, any more than I returned to Cephiro to spy for you. That's what they believe, you know. They don't understand the way I chose. The way I am.

~*I'll miss you, Lantis. See you soon.*~

I miss you too, Eagle, my beautiful golden eagle with eyes that can see inside my head like no eagle ever born. I'll see you soon. We may be on different sides. But I want you to know something; whatever side you're on, that's the side I long to be on.

~*Until we meet again.*~

Until we meet again.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Well, now I hope I've confused you good and proper. I've noticed something...I write a lot of fanfic while I'm supposed to be writing my English paper. Tell me what you think of my take on Lantis' motivations when you review! *hint hint anvil-esque hint* Ja ne minna!
