Seeking Something Different

Disclaimer: These characters are not mine; they belong to the wonderful Miss Rowling. However, this story is mine, as is the personalities created for both these canon characters. That's all. Enjoy ^^

Megan's long bangs flew back from her face as she picked up speed, trying her hardest to catch up with the tricky golden ball. Below her she could hear Susan cheering her on from the middle of the empty field. This was the third day they had come out here to practice. The Hufflepuff quidditch team was in dire need of a new seeker since Cedric had died, and so Megan had vowed to make herself the best, so they would have no choice but to choose her. Susan, being her closest friend and more, had agreed to help, and they came up with this plan to wake up early every morning and use the quidditch pitch before any of the teams needed it. She wanted to do all she could to help Megan accomplish her dream.

The snitch cut to the side and zoomed away, out of Megan's reach. The girl snarled and rose higher into the air to look for it again. Susan checked her stop watch, 3 minutes and 27 seconds. If she could catch it before 4 minutes were up, she'd be at her personal best so far.

"Hang in there, Meg!" she shouted. "You'll get it!"

At this, Megan looked harder, finally spotting a glint of gold near the goal posts. She wouldn't miss it this time; she wanted it too much to let it slip by. Faster and faster she flew, reaching out, until the small wings beat upon her fingers and her hand closed around the ball. Her grounded friend cheered as she set down and ran over to her, clutching the snitch and holding it proudly in the air.

Susan watched her run up, unable to keep herself from thinking of how beautiful she looked. Her cheeks were colored red by the wind; her grey- brown eyes sparkled with joy, half hidden by her wind-messed charcoal hair. It was obvious how badly she wanted this, how happy it would make her, and since Susan wanted more than anything to see her Meg happy she didn't care how many mornings they had to come out here before dawn. It was worth it.

Megan shoved the little golden ball into her friend's hand with a triumphant grin. "Did I make it, Susie? Am I doing better?"

"3 minutes and 42 seconds," the redhead smiled back. "You're getting there."

She let out a deep breath and stretched her arms as her companion put the snitch back in the box to return to Madam Hooch. "Good. Say, where's Hannah?"

"You should know the answer to that, Miss Jones." As she stood she swept her hair over her shoulder, letting it catch the sunlight and turn gold for a moment. "She's with Justin. I swear, they go at it like rabbits."

"I hope you're not implying that they're doing something inappropriate, hint hint."

"What would you do if they were?"

"One word: Blackmail," she grinned, linking arms with Susan as they started to walk off.

"You're wicked!" Her smile widened. "You should have been sorted into Slytherin, my dear."

"Nope, I'm all badger, Miss Bones."

Susan giggle, tilting sideways to plant a soft sweet kiss on Megan's cheek. "Thank the gods and goddesses for that."

Megan had to look away to hide the blush that spread across her delicate features. "So, um, tomorrow?"

"Yes."

"Same time?"

"Same place."

"Good."

With that they parted, satisfied, both knowing inside that the next day they might be seeking something other than the snitch. Each other's heart.
