My dearest Janet,
Over these past few weeks the sun has smiled down on my heart like it has never done before. in everything I see brightness and rebirth; cleansing- in the new leaves on the trees, the fruit in the garden, the flowers blooming in the woods. Even beggars and thieves have given me happiness in this past fortnight. I feel fresh and clean, like a baby just born. It pains me to see you distressed, I would give you anything you desire, riches, jewels, anything. Knowledge though, that is another story entirely.
"Curiosity is a dangerous petition: it is well I have not taken a vow to accord every request," (157) but for you my elfling I will endeavor to satisfy it. I entreat you not to make harsh judgement until I finish- at this time I am not able to disclose everything, but after a year and a day that we are married, I will finish my tale.
What you saw, the " woman , tall and large, with thick and dark hair hanging long down her back." (170) with a "fearful and ghastly" (171) visage was a relation of mine. I am sorry I have kept this from you, and that she gave you such a turn, but what else was I to do? She is quite mad and I haven't the heart to send her to an asylum, caged up like the wild animal that she has become.
This relation of mine doe s not usually journey outside of her lair, so do not vex yourself over much. Even though I know you are as safe as ever my thoughts wont give me peace. Oh my Janet, I am fearful for you, this house is haunted by black thoughts. Once we are married let us leave Thornfield, let us journey across the sea. And there you shall be mine, and I yours- no cruel thoughts will dare break us apart. Let us go to France!
"Good night my-" (108) love and I hope I have helped to lessen your fears. I care so much for you , that I would not be able to bear it if something should happen to my little Janet. I implore you, lock your door at night until the wedding.
Until Tomorrow, Edward
