For the ones that don't know about the original, Hoshi no Koe: The Voice of
a Distant Star is an independent 30 minutes animation work made by Makoto
Shinkai. Mostly similar in general concepts with Gainax's Gunbuster
(different time flow because of light speed, mecha concepts and alien
attacks), is a beautiful love story about two teenagers (Rikako Nagamine y
Noboru Terao) mixed with an intergalactic war against an alien race known
as Tarsian and the gap between them that the conflict made in both space
and time. The story takes place after the original.
I'm using the prologue to specify some of the things of Hoshi no Koe's main
universe.

The Quest for the Stars
Prologue:
"How many years have been now? Almost 8 years since the last time. When I came back, we cross each other. I was returning, and he was leaving to take my place. to live the life I had. to return to our time and to me."
Rikako Nagamine's thoughts flew away as she return to her students. 8 years ago, she returned as the hero who save the Risitia fleet after the assault of the Tarsians, an alien race of morphing life forms that can adapt themselves to every atmosphere known, on planet Agharta. With a single Tracer, a huge 15 meters deep space combat robot armed with a Plasma Rifle, two missile containers, a 150mm machine gun, a Particle Beam Sword and a Phase Shield, she defeated single-handed the Tarsian's mother ship, giving the U.N. Space Forces their first real victory against the hostile aliens.
Now, back on Earth, she became an instructor in the Space Academy, training the young pilots on the handling of the Tracers. But she care little but nothing about that, because his heart is far away. His childhood friend and love, Noboru Terao left Earth 8 years ago (on Earth time) not only to battle against the enemy, but with the task of returning to her as they meant to be.
Due to the use of Light Speed, Rikako spent nearly 2 years in space, which was nearly 8 on Earth. Noboru makes his way into the U.N. Space Forces, and by the time Rikako come back, he was a Lieutenant and commanding officer of the Tracer Squad on the newly formed Archangel Fleet.
By the time that both fleets encountered in Earth space, Rikako and Noboru reach each other thanks to their cellular phones. Since high school, their messages via cell phones were the only thing that could connect them, and now, Noboru's final message before leaving Earth Sphere was simple and assuring: "I'll still love you, so wait for me. I'll return to you as we meant to be. Noboru Terao"
Now, after finishing the morning training, Rikako was heading for the space port. She was going to the Space Station Antares, a defensive base on the Earth orbit, to wait for the return of the Archangel Fleet.
"Through the years and war away. that's the story of our lives" Rikako's thoughts return to her as she pull of her cell phone. "But this time, I hope that we can live in the same universe. Noboru"
With hope, she started to write a message for him.
