Condemned to Live

Silent faces

Grim reminders of the life before us

Fear and doubt mirrored in our eyes

Where is God? Where is God?

The rails of cold steel rattle

Like the moaning of the wind

Like the screams of souls

Telling of our own fate

Look, fire!

It grows in the night

Fed by the sacrifice of others

By the cruelty of another

Eight simple words

Spoken without care

Without thought

Men to the left, women to the right

Flames grow ever nearer

Inviting us into warmth and brightness of its core

But we are saved to die another day

The gates loom above: Work is liberty

Night consumes us

The sun shall never dawn on us again

Keep faith, one says, but I say

Why?

The sad angel

Once a bright and beautiful child

Remains silent as he is hung

And now I say, God is here, hung on the gallows beside this angel

The freezing winds bites us

Snow blinds us as we march

Many fall and do not stir

Never to walk again

The rails rattle once more

Food is thrown at us

Father turns against son

Friend against friend

A wail of death rises above wind

And is taken up by all

Joined as one in our sorrow

Not knowing against whom we cry

New gates of steel

New torture waits

But in the Night we are nothing

We care not; we do not feel

I awake in the cold morning

To find myself alone

The bunk beneath me is empty

I am alone

Freedom finds me

My suffering is over

I look to the mirror

And a corpse gazes back

The look in his eyes shall never leave me
