He sat there, watching her sleep. Watching her breathe. Watching her every move. It was like he had never seen anybody do it before. How he ended up like this, he needed to know. He remembered the disbelief, the angst in her eyes the night he left. He regretted it now. He meant to hurt her then. Emotions took over for those two weeks they hadn't seen each other. She wasn't there when he needed her, but when she needed him, he was right by her side. After he left for the Congo, he started to miss her. It finally hit him what he left behind in Chicago. He left her, his friends, and his family. How could he have let this happen? He had been sitting on the sidelines watching and waiting for Abby to part with Luka. He got his chance, but now it seems he didn't have it anymore. When he was in the clinics, he half expected Abby to show up on the front porch, waving and smiling. It never happened. It's a mystery how thoughts can suddenly pull you off the ground, oblivious to anything around you.

"Carter?" She asked gloomily, peering at the man before her. He jumped and reality came back to him.

"Abby," he replied. He didn't know what else to say. He was afraid of saying the wrong thing. He never was afraid like that before.

"You're back from the dead?"

"I wasn't dead."

"You were to me," she said putting her head back down on the feather-pillow and pulling the sheets up to her neck. There was silence then Abby dared to speak again.

"Why? Why are you back?" She mumbled.

"Luka sent me back," he answered. Apparently it wasn't the right answer. Abby groaned and turned away. Carter tried to turn her back over to face him, but Abby fought him off.

"Get off of me! How did you get in?"

"I have the key," he said. There was another more silence. Abby said no more and Carter didn't know what to say. He sat there for a couple of minutes. He took a peek at Abby and found that she had fallen back asleep, or at least looked like it. He stood up, walked to the door, and glanced back at her. He wasn't so sure if she would take him back. He prayed that she would get back up and walk to him, but his hopes died when she didn't. He turned back around and headed towards the door. He was waiting for that second chance.
