She never did see the other car.
She heard it, though. The overwhelming crash of metal on metal. The pop of the airbags. The horn, continuously blaring. And the frantic screams of a woman she didn't know.
All she saw was white. Then nothing.

She had heard there was supposed to be a tunnel, her departed family members waiting for her on the other side. There was no tunnel here, however. Only a large white room from which there seemed to be no escape. She heard voices in the distance, only there were too many to far away to understand. It was a while before she realized she wasn't alone.
"Are you Death?" she asked, her voice sounding unnaturally loud.
A slight nod was all the affirmation given. Colleen had always imagined Death to be dark, scary, foreboding, ugly, but the Death standing before her now was none of those things. She was beautiful, quiet, and peaceful. Qualities Colleen wishes she possesed. Qualities she felt she was very close to possessing as she began to let go of her demons, her mortal life.
The distant voices, however, were getting clearer.
Come on Colleen, come back to me
"I have to go, he's calling me," she explained.
"So is He," even her voice was beautiful and comforting.
I'm not going to let you go. Not now. Not ever
"He needs me."
"Does he?" For the first time, Colleen sensed something cold and jealous.
"Yes," she hated the doubt that had slithered into her voice.
"Because he loves you?"
"Yes," her voice slightly stronger now.
"There was one before, there will be another soon."
She fought with the doubt and jealousy that had invaded her body. "She won't be me. He needs me."
"Because he loves you best?"
"Maybe not best, but first. And always."
"And what, child, do you know of always?"
"Only what I know of love."
"Which is?"
Please, baby. Come back to me
"That I have a lot to learn."

Colleen woke with a start to find she was lying in a hospital bed, her father holding her hand.
"Hey," he said, wiping away a tear. "I thought I lost you."
She gave him a weak smile. "Never happen."
