"You ready to call it a night?" Kim asks, stifling a yawn as we restock the bus at the end of yet another shift together.
"Your place or mine," I tease, looming so close that I can feel her tiny body against mine, her breath in my ear.
She laughs. She thinks I'm funny, but it's not really so much a joke to me anymore.
What she doesn't know is that the answer I long to hear is so much more than the fleeting "Good night, Carlos," I get as she sidesteps my embrace and slips off into the darkness.
