Max and Liz drove in stillness down the stretched endless road. Outside, the sun baked down onto the road creating mirages. Vultures hovered above in search of a dying animal and no one seemed to be on the road except for the two of them. Liz sat in the passenger's side of the black Explorer writing in her diary while Max drove, concentrating on the road only. For the past 2 hours, none of them spoke, nor did they attempt to. They were puzzled by the fact that they were given another chance on Earth. Liz felt content, she felt secure again. She paused from her writing and stared at the 24 karat gold ring on her left ring finger. Sleepily, she closed her eyes, her hand over the ring. Minutes later, she had dozed off.
Max looked over to his newly wedded wife and smiled. Even though he had made it out along with everyone else, he still didn't believe he deserved Liz. Everything he put her through had caused her to leave her home behind. He looked back remembering all the times she smiled at him so sweetly. That's what he loved about her most was her smile. So beautiful, he thought. Nothing inside of him made him think that it wasn't worth the risk of saving her life that afternoon in the Crashdown. He loved her. He turned back to the road and images ran through his head. Everything that has ever happened seemed to replay.
The night was growing older as Maria drove to no destination. She thought about Michael on the way. Why didn't he come with me, she asked herself. I would've protected him. Michael was a loner, always thinking he could take care of himself. The truth was, he couldn't. They left each other on bad terms, although she hugged him before he left. Who knows where he is now, she thought. Maria felt tired suddenly, and felt she couldn't drive anymore. She pulled off the side of the road and got out. Walking over to the hood of the car, tears ran down her cheeks.
He always did this to her. He always seemed to leave angry. Even after everything Maria had done for him, he never learned self-control. She looked around at the empty highway. Barren trees surrounded her. The weather was still warm, but not too hot. I'll just rest for a moment, she thought. She wanted to go home, but she couldn't. If the hunter's had found her, they would take her, question her, and make her pinpoint Max, Isabel, and Michael's location. Sure, she knew where they were going, but where they were now was a mystery.
She wanted to stay behind. She left her mother there alone, and she would miss her wedding. She had been engaged to Sheriff Valenti for three months now, but at least her was good to her. No other man had treated her as well. She was happy for her. Maria only wanted for Michael to love her that way. She knew he did, but he never seemed to show it and she knew it was hard for him to leave the way he did.
