It was so dark outside. The boys were still half-asleep when they walked out of the D-Tent. But soon enough, they all grabbed a shovel and started digging. They didn't know what was going on, and didn't really care. The sun rose higher and higher in the sky and ZigZag could not bear one more minute. His wild, crazy hair fell in front of his face and sweat dripped off his forehead. Looking into the distance, the waves of heat blurred his view. That particular day, it took ZigZag almost twice as long as it had before. He didn't know what he was doing there anymore.

When he was finally done with his hole, ZigZag lay in his lame excuse for a bed and started remembering everything he had before he was sent off into the fiery hell that was Camp Greenlake. He remembered his guitar, sitting at home with no one to play it, his parents, and his home. He didn't belong in a place like this.

If he were in a normal high school, he would be getting ready for prom right about now. But, no....it's not like that. But the next day, when ZigZag went to finish his hole, everything changed with her.

It's like she came out of nowhere, emerging from the desert itself. When he saw her, he knew she was something. She stood at about 5 foot 3, brown hair, fair skin, and deep brown eyes. She felt a gaze fall upon her, and turned to see ZigZag. "he..he.he..hello," he said. He was so nervous. Usually, talking to a girl wasn't that hard for him, but this time it was different. She stayed silent. "Where d'you come from?" he asked to break the ice. "Up north. I ran away from home and just kept running." She spoke softly, but still with a strength that was hidden deep within her soul. It was obvious that she traveled far from the scratches and tears upon her. Zigzag found relief that she wasn't bitten by a yellow spotted lizard. If she had been, he wouldn't have gotten the chance to meet her.

She never revealed her true name to Zigzag, so he called here Soleil, meaning sun, which is what he saw her by. Then on, they spent a lot of time together because, her being so far away from home, the counselors let her stay until the next bus came. They would stay up and talk until morning. She stayed in the empty cabin that had not been in use ever since it almost burned down a fire a few years ago.

After a month or so, she was still at Camp Greenlake. And because of that, the Warden felt it was time for her to start diggin'. Soleil would always dig in spots near Zigzag, and him near her. They both finished there holes after everyone else had left. The sun was setting and they sat together basking in the glow. It was in that moment that they kissed for the first time.
