Thou Shalt Not Kill

Black on white, printed neatly. Thou Shalt Not Kill. Each first letter a capital. Religion class. Thou. Shalt. Not. Kill. Ken turned away. "Why did I even come?" he muttered.

Omi stuck his head in the classroom. "Ken-kun, my classroom is on the left, this is the right," he said with a grin.

"Oh…gomen," Ken picked up the box labeled 'Open house supplies' and carried it across the hallway to Omi's classroom. Thou shalt not kill. Thoushalt…not kill…thoushaltnotkill… A sea of blood threatened to engulf him, the cries of the dying rang in his ears. He looked with mingled disbelief and horror at the blood on his gloves. He swallowed, swallowing the bitter bile that rose in his throat as the scent of blood filled the night. He trembled, his knees felt weak. "Why won't you die?!" Betrayal. Pain. Bulletproof vests only stop bullets. Rules made to be broken- no other way…necessary evil…help me! Thou shalt not kill- thoushalt-shaltnot…shalt not kill! With a cry, he ran blindly out the door, down the hall, out of the building, not knowing or caring where he went, not hearing Omi ask him what was wrong. But the word 'wrong' stuck firmly in his mind. Wrong, wrong-are we? Were we? Had to- had to- itai! His head hurt, everything hurt- he just had to keep running and maybe the pain would go away.

"Omi, slow down," Aya ordered. "I can't understand a word you're saying."

Yoji looked up curiously from watering one of the sill boxes of flowers.

Aya frowned. "He what? I see…I'll be there shortly." He hung up the phone.

"What was that about?" Yoji asked.

"Something's wrong with Ken," Aya said simply.
