"I was going to tell you." The girl replied.
"When? When the kids came?" Lorelai half yelled, cause the girl
to cringe. "I'm sorry, it was just a shock. This whole morning has. Lets go
sit down, and you can explain everything." The girl nodded, and Lorelai
guided her to the living room where they sat down.
After endless minutes of Lorelai's opened mouth gaping, the
girl finished.
"Wow, ummmm, ummmm.."Lorelai gave the girl a guilty look for
not asking her name earlier.
"Elizabeth. Elizabeth Anne Williamson."
"Well, Elizabeth, sounds like you've had, well, quite a life,
how'd you handle all this?"
Shrugging, Elizabeth simply replied, "I don't know, I guess..I
just have." Adding a little smile, the first Lorelai had seen.
"Um, I'm gonna go make some coffee, you want some?" In
response, Elizabeth simply glanced down, and Lorelai nodded embarrassed,
got um and walked away.
As Lorelai rattled away in the kitchen, Elizabeth reflected
on her past, and what she told Lorelai.
From the moment she was born, life hadn't been great. Her
mother, just barely sixteen was disowned by her parents and forced to move
to a small one roomed apartment. Her father left her mother, denying
Elizabeth before she was even born. As a child, Elizabeth dealt with her
drug-abusing, alcoholic mother, and was forced to grow up quickly. She
learned to do her laundry and cook her dinner and the age of four. She
taught her self to sew at five, because they didn't have money, she needed
to make her own clothes. She got pregnant and fourteen, by her on-again off-
again seventeen year old boyfriend, who like her father before him left
her, denying her child. She went to the free clinic a few blocks from her
house to get periodic check ups. Six months into her pregnancy, Elizabeth's
mother died from a cocaine over dose. From collection form her church,
Elizabeth managed to pay for a small funeral for her mother. Then she was
"shipped off" to Lorelai.
Lorelai walked into the room carrying a mug, and some
strawberries, breaking Elizabeth of her concentration.
"I thought you might be hungry, so I brought you some
strawberries. If you want, later we could go to Luke's, a small dinner we
have here, and shopping for some clothes for you." Lorelai said softly to
Elizabeth, who simply shrugged her shoulders. "Elizabeth, its ok to cry."
Lorelai said, who, seconds later, was holding a shaking, sobbing girl in
her arms.
