It was a cool early morning, young Lee Stetson's stomach growled. "Shut up
will you," he mumbled to himself as he stumbled into the small kitchenette
of his college apartment.
He opened one of the gray cabinets and pulled out a coffee can. He opened it; the rich smell of coffee wafted out, but in the bottom of it were only a few coffee grounds.
"Just great Stetson," he shoved the can back on the counter. He rummaged through another cabinet and pulled out a can of beans. He wrinkled his nose as he stared down at the label. Didn't he have beans last night for supper? And for lunch. And breakfast. And supper the night before.
His stomach growled again. Slowly he opened the can; he pulled a spoon out of the sink and grabbed a pot from the counter. He looked them over. They were clean enough.
He scraped the beans into the pot and warmed them on the small stove. When they were warmed he lifted the pot and sat down at the small card table and ate with the same spoon.
He studied the mushy stuff that clung to the spoon. Suddenly he wasn't hungry anymore. "One day," he said aloud. "I'll never eat another bean in my life."
