Blind
"There we stand about to fly
Peeking down over land, parachute behind
What was that moment for which we live
Without a parachute, about to dive?"
Moonlight streamed in through the open window, alleviating the darkness of the room with its gentle glow. The light danced over Samantha's skin, its quiet radiance emphasizing the peace with which she slept. Absently, Jack stroked the blonde hair that spilled over his bare chest, resting his cheek on the soft top of Samantha's, which was buried in his shoulder. He wondered how he could possibly be this comfortable with her, how this could feel so much like home, when it was only the first night they had spent together. There was no awkwardness, though both certainly had felt the same nervous excitement. It had been so familiar, yet completely different from anything he had ever experienced. And now, with the warm weight of Sam's body intertwined with his own, nothing had ever felt so right.
"Find myself convincing
Blindly falling faster
How easy
Oh, know the place I'm leaving, and the rest is just gone
Oh, the adoration, but how much strength does it take
For exploration, for split decision?
Or are you stronger to remain?"
It was wrong, Jack knew, it was wrong for him to feel such utter ease with this woman, this woman who was not his wife. But he was blind to everything except Samantha. She was his every thought, her sparkling brown eyes, her playful smile, her gentle touch, her incessant sweetness and irrepressible spirit, everything that she was filled him so completely, so wholly, that there was no room inside for anything else. He had fallen victim to the glow that emanated from her, to her shy yet insistent touch, and when he had searched those dark eyes and seen the fire burning inside them, any resolve he had left disappeared.
"It crept up on me
Ignored all my pleas
Begging to leave
No justice to maim me
Fell out of the sky
Cease it to be
Without a reply, gravity fails me.."
It wasn't something he had been looking for, or expecting. Never had he thought that this woman would come to mean...everything, to him. They had been friends, of course, and maybe in the back of his mind he had realized there was something else there, something that ran deeper than friendship. Eventually they began spending more and more time together, each always finding some excuse to be near the other, yet even then Jack hadn't seen it coming. Or maybe he had, and chose to ignore it, desperately clinging to what he thought was the right thing to do. And then he couldn't ignore it any longer. He couldn't ignore the growing strength and depth of his feelings, nor the raw honesty he saw in her when she looked at him, the protective barriers down, her soul bared.
"And when I awoke, I knew what was real
I hope to convince you
Lies they all torture me
Opened the door
Knew what was me
I finally realized
Parachute over me.."
Maybe it wasn't the right thing to do, maybe he should have tried harder to resist everything he was feeling. But this, this was real. Samantha's contended breathing, her warmth and softness and sweetness, even in sleep..it was real, and beautiful, and alive, and Jack couldn't believe that something so deep and true wasn't, at least in some ways, right. He closed his eyes, allowing the steady rise and fall of Sam's body to lull him into sleep, as the radiant moonlight washed over their peaceful forms.
"Parachute over me.."
