Chapter One: The Last Straw

Setting: Hogwarts Owlry

Hedwig sat on her perch listening to the rain outside. It had been weeks since Harry had entrusted her with a letter, and even that had just been a small trip to Hagrid's hut. She longed to be sent on a journey by Harry, like he had sent so many other owls, a journey of importance. She was sure that Harry had a very good reason for ignoring her; after all she had been his loyal companion since he had started at Hogwarts. She was his first and most trusted friend, wasn't she?

Harry ran quickly up the steps to the owlry. He had another letter to send to Sirius. He hadn't spoken to his godfather in weeks and was still under his oath that he would keep his posted on the latest happening at Hogwarts. He opened the door to the owlry; sounds of hooting and the ruffling of feathers greeted him.

Harry walked to the middle of the room, and surveyed all the owls, deciding which to chose to go on the journey. He saw Hedwig out of the corner of his eye. She looked eager to be chosen. He truly wasn't to send Hedwig, but being so beautiful, she would surely be noticed. After all, Sirius was still in hiding.

Harry saw a shabby looking barn owl father down the row. He walked closer and saw the name Galileo written on the tag around his neck.

"This one will do", said Harry to no one in particular.

Galileo stuck out his leg dutifully, while directed a triumphant smirk toward Hedwig. Hedwig lowered her head somberly; she had become the object of ridicule to all of the other owlry inhabited. Her jealousy was mixed with rage however, and at that very moment she promised herself that she would soon exact her revenge.
